Medicare is not run for profit? So you are telling me all the private healthcare companies that have a medicare offshoot like humana gold, freedom health, and the countless others, don't do so based on profit? I am aware there are probably tons and tons of government subsidies, but those same companies only got into the medicare game due to profitability. What emily said is what I agree with: Profit should not be associated with peoples health/lives. While some right leaning people may hate Michael Moore for many reasons, his overall point of his movie Sicko was exactly that, and a very just point...Healthcare decisions, and in turn peoples lives should not be based on potential profitability. I'm all for capitalism and the private sector and competition...I do not think healthcare should operate on a for profit system, because as soon as you bring for profit into the equation, you have those companies doing anything they can within any form of wiggle room to keep the bottom line in check, which is usually denial of coverage...Regardless if it's for a specific medication your doctor wants you on and not a generic (which has often been found to be nowhere nearly as effective as the name brand), a procedure, or a test.
If for profit healthcare companies only required you to pay your reasonable premium and then receive everything your doctor ordered, i'd be fine with it. But that, just like your rainbow land analogy, doesn't exist.
