techniques for PFTs

Yesterday the boys had a follow-up clinic appt for the second week of their cleanout. Josh just started having a tickly cough (not sure allergies or cold) and was very down about his anticipated PFT performance.
On the way up he was reviewing the proceddure and device in his head trying to figure an "angle" for improved technique. Sure enough, he blew 10 points higher than last week! When the technician left the room he told me there was a trick to how you hold the mouthpiece.
Anyone else know about this or have a similar trick?

I don't know any mouthpiece tricks, but I do believe good posture can help.

I do my pfts standing up. My tendency when emptying my lungs is to want to bend over and force that air out. If I concentrate on standing up straight (and not closing off my airways), I get a better score.

Our clinic lets kids stand until they turn 10, then they have to sit down for pfts. Interesting...How exactly did Josh hold the mouthpiece?

I stand and bend over as blowing. It's no different than blowing out birthday candles - they don't care how you blow at my clinic since we are creatures of habit and end up doing it the same every time year after year.

Yep my son has his own set of tricks it has to do with mouthpiece and for him involves a way that he can hold breath and blow he has to do it a certain way. He's been doing it since about 13 and he will be 29. he tried teaching his sister how but she never could do it.

My sister used to put a nose clip on her ear when she blew... TOTALLY psychological, but her numbers were ALWAYS higher when she did it. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">
