When I read the title to the thread, my first thought was that I'd always follow that deep breath with a heaving cough! (and wake darling up from her beauty sleep!)

I've had some days where I'd wake up and as I'd take in a breath, feel a little bit of soreness in my ribs, but then realize I was practicing my Aikido the night before, and was a little sore cause I was working with the instructor, and he really threw me on the mat hard, one time. (but that was a long time ago)

The wife often suggests I stretch my limbs, etc., and probaby taking at least one deep breath is probably good, too. Wish I lived closer to the countryside, for a little bit cleaner air, but it's better air than where I lived during my first marriage.

I've learned to pace myself when getting up and out of bed. Sometimes I have my husband pull me gently to a sitting position, so that I don't take in too much air too quickly. By starting off slowly, I can usually avoid the pain, but if I bolt upright too quickly (usually cuz I need to make a potty run) then I end up spending 10 minutes or more dealing with a "hack attack" (lots and lots and lots of coughing).

The pain is usually in the same place, and is worse on cold mornings. Sometimes I can tell just based on the location or the degree of pain whether I'll see blood in my sputum. I'm 95% accurate with that. It's gross.
