The Vest in Adults

Hi all!

My Dr. has never talked to me about doing "The Vest" but I wanted to hear people's opinions on it and whether or not you recommend it.

First off, how much does it cost? Is it covered by health insurance? What brand(s) do you recommend?

Second, for those of you who are athletes (I bike 5 miles/day and also try to run 3 miles/day) what does the Vest do that running or aerobic excercise doesn't?

Last, for anyone who has tried it and DOESN'T do it, why not?

How often do you do treatments? Do you take it on vacation or take breaks from it? In other words, how strict are you about it? Do you ever slack off on it? Do some do it "as needed"?

I've read about some of your vest usage in blogs but never really got straight up info.

Hi.

I've been using the vest for a long time. When I got it, my insurance did cover it, but Hill-Rom was going to let me keep it even if insurance didn't cover it.

I exercise alot too. I don't run, but I do walk 2 miles a day at a 4.1 mph pace. I think exercise is instrumental in keeping your lungs healthy, but I don't think it alone is enough--at least not when you are getting older/progressing in your illness. For me, I think exercise and chest pt is the best combo.

I do my vest 30 minutes twice a day. I never ever miss a treatment. If I am going to be going out that evening and think I won't do it when I come home, I will do an afternoon vest instead of the evening. If I am sick, I will do a third vest.

I highly recommend the vest. I don't want to be dependent on someone trying to give me percussion. I actually did do chest pt on myself for many years. It was hard keeping those arms up to try to clap my own back!!!! The vest lets me be completely independent. I actually don't mind doing it either. In the morning, I have my quiet time/Bible reading and at night I read whatever.

The only time I don't like doing my vest is when I am traveling. I am very sensitive about the noise in a hotel room. Also, the size is cumbersome. You won't have that problem though---the newer vests are a lot smaller.

Hope that helps.

My CF is extremely mild but I do have a vest. I do it once a day for 16 minutes. Since I just had a baby my doc said if I have to make a choice between using the vest or running on my treadmill, I should run. When I travel I take my Flutter since it is tiny. When I take a vacation that is longer than a week and doesn't permit much exercise, I'd bring my vest. Just haven't done that yet.

I think the benefit of the vest is that you can huff and cough while using it-it would be hard to do that while running and not lose your breath. Would you be able to use the vest and still do the same amount of exercise that you normally do? Just a thought.

Hey

I have the Hill-Rom vest and I love it. I don't have a chance to exercise as much as I would like so this is a great way for me to get at least 2 CPT sessions in a day. My insurance did cover it when I got it about 9 years ago.

I would talk to your Dr and see if he/she recomends it for you. One thing my Dr told me was that actual exercise (you biking and running) is better than the vest. He told me that if I were to exercise - cardio - that would take the place of one vest session a day. Sounds like you get a lot of exercise and may not need the vest. But I am not a Dr <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">
