"THE VEST"

How often should my 3yr-old grandaughter use her vest a day? She goes to a private daycare provider that does it 3 times a day--the last about 4:30 in pm. Shouldn't she have it before bed? Shes's not very congested but the recent x-rays showed a little something in her lungs?

Ry did CPt twice a day for most of his life, but I don't even know what they suggest now.

Thanks, I was just worried that we're doing it wrong. My daughter Demelza has been in somewhat of a denial stage since Kaylees diagnosis, and didn't do the pulmonary like she should have. On our last CF visit (she goes every 3 mo), the doc said her lungs looked like the lungs of an 8yr old--and shes only 3! He ordered the vest right away. Its so heavy that the sitter thought if she did it 3x a day it would be just as good as 2x (morn&nite). I was just worried.

Terri,

My kids have a pt person who comes three times a week. When they had the vest, it was once a day. Doing it three times a day is not going to hurt her, but it is a lot of time. What did the doctor say about it?

Terri,

My 5 year old son does the vest first thing in the morning, then 4 hours later we do a breathing treatment with hand pecussion, then 4 hours later another brathing treatment with hand percussion and then before bedtime another breathing treatment with the vest. So vest (20 minutes each) 2 times a day and hand percussion(20 minutes each) 2 times a day. He has done this since birth, when sick he does them every 3-4 hours around the clock.

DS doesn't have the vest yet, but we've always done 3-4 times a day of CPT with nebs. Friend of mine's granddaughter got the vest a few months ago and they do it 3-4 times a day also -- she's not quite three and they were concerned with some inflamation they saw at her last cf clinic appointment.

I do the flutter and vest 2X a day and up to 3-4 times a day when I am sick and/or on home IV's. I have done it that way my whole life since being diagnosed at age 2 and I am now 34. My FEV1 is 67%

Kait does her vest atleast 3x a day..when she is sick she does it 4x a day.....morning before school...at 4:30 after school and at bedtime...around 9:00pm...Her docs have told me that this is more than most CFers do their vest but her PFT's are great so not to stop anything that we are doing

There are a few times when she will skip a CPT when she is doing great and wants to go somewhere .... doesn't happen very often but i do let her slide once in a great while.

Lately I've been using it 3-4 times a day. I don't always cough stuff up, but it seems to help me feel better anyway. By the way, check out the website for the vest. There is a video on their of what it looks like inside the lungs while the vest is one. The had someone where the vest during a bronchoscopy I think. Anyway, you can say it moving the secretions around inside the lungs. They say that is helpful even if you can't cough the stuff out.
