I read all about it on here and don't think I actually know what it is...is it anything like autogenic drainage, or is it used with a device of some sort?
If it is what I am thinking it is a device - similar in function to the Flutter. I had one a while back when they first came out. It is small enough to where you could carry it in a purse and/or hold it in one hand. It has a mouth piece and you breath into it and it vibrates the air and is supposed to help with airway clearance. I had one and used it for me it worked better than the Flutter because you could use it in any position (you could be laying down - or you could be sitting up and just have the thing tilted at an odd angle) where the Flutter had to be in a certain position or at a certain angle to function properly. The only problem with the acapella I had was there is a magnet inside it that keeps it working and the magnet in mine got dislodged and there was really no way to fix it.
Basically to answer your que. It is a device used for airway clearance - but involves you breathing into it and vibrating you airways that way vs the vest that shakes you till you get it up more like manual chest pt. By my understanding also - though I never used mine this way - you had the ability to attach a nebulizer to the acapella and could get your pt while you were breathing in and out doing your neb treatment. Again I never used it that way so I don't know how effective that is/was.
I think it is useless (for me anyways). I think the vest is the way to go. I followed the directions and blew the crap out of it, and didn't find even the faintest tinge of increased desire to expectorate.
