Thoughts/sick?

Hi. I don't post often because I am lucky and am not frequently sick. I thought I was having an allergy exacerbation last week so I went to my campus health service to get a prednisone burst to get things under control. Because of my medical history they wouldn't do a prescription over the phone. I ended up with possible pnemonia, a temp of 102, high hr (115), sats were ok but peak flow was low and sounded like I had reduced air flow over lower lobes, particularly right side. They did an xray which didn't rule out pnemonia but didn't rule it in.

I ended up on pred burst, increased albuterol, and Levaquin. I still have a fever. Cough is looser now but I'm still sob. I have a follow-up Wednesday. How long does it take pneumonia for those of you who have fairly high fev to go away with oral antibiotics? I didn't do a sputum culture because there was nothing coming up. There's still a really limited amount even now. I'm not sure if I should be concerned. I'm still tired but that could be the prednisone or antibiotics.

It can easily take a couple courses of oral antibiotics to get over pneumonia. At least it sounds like you caught it early, which should help. Just make sure you keep an eye on things, even if you are feeling better at the end of the antibiotics, and especially if your prednisone ends at about the same time. The germs might still be in your system and you're only feeling comparatively better. Also, if you're on saline or pulmozyme, you also might want to talk to your doctor about upping your doses to help you cough stuff up.

I have never been able to get through pneumonia with just oral antibiotics and if I am running fevers for ANY reason I need IV fluids in addition.

This is just me, but I think when its advanced to pneumonia that most of us need more then orals.

I tend to agree with Mel. I guess it will depend how sensitive your system still is to oral meds... mine is not sensitive at all, so this is not an option.

You mentioned the x-ray doesn't rule in or out pneumonia, so why are they treating for pneumonia? Is it possible its something else causing issues like staph, psuedo, etc.? I wouldn't treat pneumonia unless I was sure with x-ray or culture that that was in fact the culprit. If its something else like a virus, the orals won't do anything anyway....

And, I was told last time I was on IVs and got a cold that a fever does not necessarily mean its not a virus that just needs to run its course.
