To those who have cultured MRSA..

I was treated with Bactrim constantly as a maintenance drug regimen when I first found out I cultured MRSA (age 16) until I went to adults at 21. After that my doc took me off Bactrim and would only treat me with IV meds when I was sick and he normally alternated between Vancomycin and Zyvox for IV treatment. I also got a few other IV meds to treat the Pseudo I had too.

I was never able to get rid of the MRSA pre transplant. I had a double lung transplant at 24 and am going to be 30 in 2 weeks. I have been MRSA free for a few years now (not even in my sinuses). I still have a strain of staph in my sinuses but no MRSA. I wouldn't recommend a transplant just to get rid of a bacteria <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0"> but figured I would put it out there since you may be starting to think about the transplant side of things at your FEV1.

Good Luck

I get Vancomycin as well. Just got off it a couple days ago actually. I've had MRSA in my sputum for about 8 years now.

I cultured MRSA for the first time when I was 12 (now 19), I've never been able to clear a culture free of MRSA. I almost always also culture E. Coli and Psuedomonis. My usual treatment is Vanc, with Tobramycin or Doxycyline. For me Bactrim never works.

When I first cultured MRSA I was in the hospital (surprise surprise) before the days when people would gown and glove up. I was started on vanc, and then was treated on and off with Bactrim. Bactrim worked for a few years until I felt it did pretty much nothing. If my MRSA flares up I do Doxycline, minocycline, or zyvox. for a few weeks. After having cultured MRSA for 5 years I only ever had 1 culture negative for it. It was right after my longest hospital stay (after coming in once I didn't feel better on doxycline).
