My insurance doesn't cover the Freestyle test strips any more and I need to get a new meter. I've been told they cover Onetouch Ultra 2 and UtlraSmart or one of the Accu-Check meters (not sure which one). I don't know much about any of them, as I am not diabetic, yet, but test to make sure I'm where I need to be. Since I am pregnant, I want to keep a close eye on my sugars to take action at the first sign of gestational diabetes (you know, high risk for that!). Anyway, any input you might have would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.

Good question about the meters, I was wondering myself which others feel are better/best, and why.

I currently use the onetouch ultra. It's not as detail oriented as the one I had previous (forgot what that one was though, was it Accucheck?). However, I know I can buy a module to hook up to my computer and meter and download the info and get graphs - but honestly, I'm "just not that into you" hehe - i.e., I don't care that much. I should, but I don't.

Good that you are keeping an eye on your sugars now - good practice for "if and when"

I'm interested to hear others opinions of their meters.

Hey there,

I use the One Touch UltraSmart. I LOVE it. My first few glucometers were Accucheks and I liked them but I love the OneTouch. I sometimes have a hard time getting enough blood to test - but that is a ME problem not a machine problem.

There is a light option so you can use it dimly lit areas, it reads withitn seconds - it has a count of five but I swear I feel like I don't even have time to blink before it has a reading. It also has an option where it will plot your blood sugars on agraph and show you the range that your sugars have been in - and NO that is not part of hooking it to the computer. I don't do any of the comp stuff for my glucose monitor just stick with the machine. It also has a really good memory so you can just look back over a month sometimes and see what your sugars were. It has a thing to tell you not only what time you checked your sugar but if it was a before or after meal check or what have you.

Definitely worth talking about. Also you may want to talk to your doc or if you go to an endocrinologist you may want to ask them and see what they recommend. Sometimes the newer stuff the docs have available and know more about. I actually got my UltraSmart from my doc due to his recommendation - I just wanted an updated version of my accuchek. Glad I listened to the doc though lol.

Take Care,
Lindsey

my 2 year old diabetic uses the BD meter and we love it! it doesnt take as much blood to test as the others. However out of the 2 meters that you posted about Emma did use the one tuch (it was her very first) and it was good but as someone else posted the only thing we had a hard time with was getting enough blood to test! I still have my one tuch as a "back up meter"

Good luck! - they really are all good just some take less blood which for use is important..

I have the OneTouch Ultra 2 and it's great. It's super easy and like lindsey says, it reads really quickly. The only thing is though, I prefer to use the BD lancets for it rather than the OneTouch lancets that are made for it. The BD ones feel a little softer when it comes to poking and I think they fit better in the poker...just my opinion, you may find to like the OneTouch lancets just fine.
