Tobi and Breastfeeding

Hi everyone,

I know there's been a lot of talk about using Tobi during pregnancy, but did anyone use it while they were breastfeeding? It seems like the medication would be much more likely to pass in the breastmilk than it would to pass through the placenta.

???

Thanks,
Leah 26 w/CF, mom to non-biological son, hoping to carry a biological child very soon!

I would have a hard time believing the concentration of tobramycin from inhaled TOBI is any more concentrated in breastmilk than the blood stream. The amount of tobramycin in the bloodstream can easily be tested with TOBI peaks and troughs. It is near nil. Personally, I never had a lab draw for this reason. I did breastfeed while on TOBI without worrying about it. (I was also pregnant while on TOBI) Always ask your CF doctor and your OB, but personally, I wouldn't worry about it.

IV tobramycin is a different story.

tara is right, from my understanding very little, if any, inhaled tobi gets into breastmilk.

This website has a ton of info on what is OK for breastfeeding and what isn't:
