Too Much Dairy

Hello,
I absolutely LOVE dairy but I get more congested after eating way too much. I can overdo it too, I love yogurt, cheese, everything but I start to wheeze soon after eating it too often and too much. My dielema is that I want to start taking the Scandi shakes again, because I like the taste and I have boxes full of the stuff so I'd like to use them up. Does anyone have any alternatives to the dairy in yogurt and ice cream? Those are the main ingredients I use and I use a lot of those but then after a week or so I start wheezing. Any thoughts?

I like :

Scandi Vanilla powder (don't care for chocolate!)
vanilla yogurt (subsitute for the dairy?)
vanilla ice cream (subsitute for the dairy?)
frozen concentrate orange or some combination of fruits
ice

I started with kefir (taste like yogurt) but much better for you and I have no extra congestion from my sinuses. It is a hard call for me since I no longer have the CF lungs and use to see how much dairy affected me. I read that kefir (a milk product) does not cause excessive mucus because it helps to digest lactose and it is very good for you. You can try Soy products but make sure the container says Non GMO.

I recently bought Soy Ice cream but I cannot eat just one popsicle so I am trying not to buy them all the time.

What are the ingredients in Scandishakes? Everything in moderation. A parent of a CF child wrote to me and told me before she eats dairy she takes pineapple and this helps to digest the dairy product. I believe the enzyme in pineapple is bromelain.

If you do not like kefir try taking acidolphilus pills. This will help in the digestive process of the dairy too.

Soy products are a good substitute for dairy in the scandishakes. You can also try various fruit juices (this is a really tasty option).

Taking acidolphilus pills is interesting. I wonder if that would help with the build up of mucus, because I know it does help with digestion. I'll look into it.

I do add fruit juices but I keep trying to add more calories than just juices, that's why I like the yogurt and ice cream. I will also look into the soy products. I'm not too familar with them. Thanks everyone!!

It is important to count calories. Just eat extra as much as you can. I try and space out my meals. I have mini meals seven times per day sometimes I do not even count. If I get up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom, I eat. I have found one motivator for me. I weigh myself twice daily and I know how much I should weigh in the morning and if it is a pound or two lower, i start bulking up the meals. For some reason this really gets me started. Exercise will transform the way you look if you keep up at it. Meaning you will start to see toned arms and legs and that equals weight in all the right places. Recently, I have gained five pounds and I can definitely see it. I have a goal for fifteen more pounds but I am in no rush to gain it. I now weigh 135 and I am 5'8 or just a tad under. So I am not skiny but look healthy. I feel the extra weight will be my saftey net. For some reason, I have found if I stress out, I lose weight. I think it might be the cortisol that is secreted(hormone) some people gain weight from cortisol. I am curious if this is true for us folks with CF.

Newfy

That is a cool name. Anyways, just wanted to let you know that if you do buy a brand of acidolphilus you buy one with many different strains of good bacteriums. jarrow makes a good one. They make one for travel that does not have to be put into the fridge. I would try out kefir and kefir does not cause mucus production. From consuming it for a few days now, I can say that my sinuses are much clearer. I compared the bacteriums on the bottle to the Jarrow brand. The kefir has two more strains of good bacteria that the jarrow does not have. I would only buy one, either the pills or the kefir. Yogurt is good but not as good as kefir. I say everything in moderation. Now that i am staying on kefir I am not going to take the jarrow pills. Just too much.

Good luck

Good to know, thanks. I want to try the Kefir since a few of you have said how good it is for you, better than yogurt. It will be interesting since it is a dairy product.
