I'm looking at maybe buying a ferret. I've always kind of wanted one. I'm going to wait until August if I do (after several vacations and a summer class), so there's no immediate rush. But I'm curious. I want to hear any stories you guys might have of owning ferrets. Good, bad, whatever. I just want to hear a wide range of experiences beforehand. Let me know, thanks.

hey em,

my roomie when I was away at school had two at one point. For the most part, they were great. She had to keep them in a separate room b/c they were quite rambuncsious (I totally botched that spelling)...we're talking hiding under the refridgerator, leaping out of nowhere, and dangling from curtains, but I met them a few times and they were very loveable. From what she told me, I think as long as you have the time to devote some attention to a farret so it doesn't get too restless (I think this is also why they were a little wild as she was away from them for weeks at a time), go for it.

sorry the experience I shared was not first hand

Erin, that was still firsthand enough. Thanks. Haha.

Liz, that's always what's kept me from getting one before. The smell thing. But I'm looking up potential fixes or helpers with that. You can feed them particular food (and avoid some) to help with the smell. They also are generally sold descented from pet stores. (Like skunks they have smelly thingies near their butts to spray if they're afraid, and like skunks, they can be surgically removed without harming the animal). They'll still smell a little funky (mostly I've read it's a musky smell), but if I keep the bedding/litter box clean, and be sure to clean them when they need it, it should be tolerable. I'm going to go to pet stores and play with them... When I do that, I'll be sure to smell them. Hahahaa.

I used to have a ferret in college that lived with my boyfriend a few years after I graduated, then came back to be with the two of us after we got married and bought a house. She was so much fun, and such a character, but ferrets are SO much work! When I was in school, I let her run free in my dorm room until I came home after a long day out and found she could now make the jump from my bed to my bedside table. She had knocked over the plant on my table, a glass of water (making mud), and opened every drawer she could get to, pulling all of the contents out of every single one. It looked like I had been robbed.

After that I had to get a "ferret condominium" for her when I was gone, which was a huge three story thing that she actually liked a lot. I used to take her on walks, and like I said, she was so much fun. Like a kitten playing all of the time, kind of.

Mitzi came descented, but there was a definite odor that would creep up if she wasn't bathed very often. It wasn't really offensive or horrible, but like you said, kind of a musky, dank sort of smell. I'm really sensitive to smells, so I used to put her in the bath every other day, but it got hard once I was working and had less time. They will always go to the bathroom in the same place (always a corner), so you can almost potty train them. But again, the more often you clean it out, the less smell you will have, and cleaning her cage twice or three times a day takes time too.

The lifespan of a ferret isn't very long either, and that's a hard thing. Mitzi got sick and very weak around six years old, and we had to have her put to sleep, which was the hardest, saddest thing, but something we had to do. And from what the vets (we saw two) said, six years is a good life for a ferret.

Overall, I really enjoyed having her, and we had so much fun with her. But at the same time, I don't think I would ever get another ferret ... just so much work.

I have never had one, but my cousin did several years ago. They used to let him run around the house (two stories - plenty of room for a ferret to get into trouble). He was cute, I can't smell due to nasal polyps so I don't know much about the smell.
I do know this though. they had a hard time with disappearing clothes. They would notice missing underwear, missing socks, bras, boxers and such. As long as they had him they never figured out where they went too. They ended up giving him to a friend because my cousin was going off to college and couldn't take him (VMI). Then a few years ago they were redecorating and went to move their couch. They lifted it up and foud a hole that the ferret had burroughed in the back of their couch. As they reached in it they found all of the missing underwear, socks and such that had disappeared before that.

Just a funny story and something for you to keep in mind in case things turn up missing once you get your little buddy.

I am a HUGE animal lover. I went to school undergrad to be a vet and was a vet tech for a year. But I am TERRIFIED of ferrets! My friend had 2 in college and every time I went over there they were all over me, biting and going up my pant legs. And her room did smell although that was probably for lack of cleaning. So basically I am a huge wimp ;-)

Any type of animals are a fantastic addition to any family, especially if you have health problems.

My one recommendation would be to get allergy tested - my cat allergies when I was younger made my CF flare up big time. I had no idea I was allergic.

Let us know how it goes if you get one! I've very excited for you!!!!

Emily,

I owned a ferret when I was 18 years old ~ it was my first pet as an adult living alone ~ I chose it for a couple of reasons 1) my parents would never get one 2) it seemed to have so much more energy and excitement than a kitten. I did enjoy having it but there were problems ~ most have already been mentioned ~

Smell is an issue ~ although the last time I checked at the pet store and held one I noticed no smell and the store attendant showed me the stuff they put in the water and I think a special food that is now available ~ I know that animal did not smell anything like my animal did. I think there is also a difference between getting a male and a female but I cannot remember which is better ~ I think it is the boys that smell more but I could be wrong about that. Also I remember my clothing would smell if he had climbed in the laundry basket or I would carry him around before work.

Biting can be an issue ~ my ferret liked to bite big toes. It is my understanding that the way their eyes see things big toes look an awful lot like a mouse head. I only noticed this becoming a problem with the less time I spent with my ferret. When I was single he was great ~ he never bit anyone or myself ~ when I started dating my husband he would bite his toes anytime he was over ~ then he started biting my toes when I was sleeping !

They need a lot of time and attention ~ my guy seemed to be quite wonderful when I would spend a lot of time with him, but once I started dating my husband and was not home as much, he got meaner and less friendly.

If I recall correctly they are good mousers ~ at the time I lived in a basement apartment of a house ~ the girls upstairs complained about mice in the house ~ I had NEVER seen a mouse or evidence of a mouse in my area :)

I think overall they are a wonderful choice for a pet, as long as you know you can spend a lot of time with them and you buy whatever that new product is for their food/water that helps them not to smell :)

Be sure to let us know what you do !

Thanks for all the stories/advice, guys!!

Alyssa, yes, from what I've read, males do smell worse. If I get one, I'll be looking at a female. Haha.

Jenica, for times when I'm not in my room, I had already looked at a ferret condo thingie. It has like 3 or 4 stories, a ferret hammock, a litter box, food and water bowls, etc etc, and was actually fairly cheap after I checked several different sites. I found some for more than $150, and I found another with almost as much stuff for like $50 (I bookmarked that one ).

well all I can tell you is my family had a ferret when I was a kid growing up. I remember being thrilled when we got it-only to realize that it wasn't a cuddly kid friendly pet. -I'm saying that particular ferret-not that all are that way. I really don't know much about ferrets-just the experience I had.

It was a pretty boring animal, and always getting lose and going in the unreachable places in the house and destroying something. I remember it always chewed the hair off my Barbie dolls.

I don't want to squash you ferret dreams!!!

I'm a dog person-obviusly, but if you really want one do it! Get a healthy one, and vet it, and keep its cage clean cause as was said-they can start to stink. But no more than a rat or guinea pig.

I feel bad if this seems negative, but you asked! And I was a kid when we had it, adn it was years ago, so take what I said with a grain of salt.

I asked for good AND bad, Christian. Hahaha. Thanks. I'm usually a dog person myself, but my dog died 2 years ago and I haven't gotten a new one yet. I was going to this spring, but the lady who was up for breeding with our male (we bred goldens three times in my life, and the male we have is the son of the dog I loved that died, so we wanted to breed him on purpose) never called me back when she said she would and I don't have her number anymore. Basically, I know a ferret will be less expensive than a dog and I'm looking to try something new. I still have to look and see, read more, etc. But your story didn't bum me out. I asked for all of the stories, and that's what I wanted.

As for lots of work, I don't doubt it. I've had pets all my life, all sorts of different ones. Very easy ones, and pretty difficult ones. Cats, dogs (and I had a dog of my own, as I said, so I was responsible for her), guinea pigs, hamsters, fish, birds, etc etc. I know they're not nearly as easy as hamsters. Haha. Keep the stories coming if you've got any more!

Since you took it so well....... I'll tell you this:

1st off I'm going to say-I am an animal LOVER! I had nothing to do with what I'm about to say!

But-the ferret was basically my brothers' pet. At the time, my brother was into exotic animals and had had a Ball Python for about 2 yrs.

You can guess the rest. And I'm really sorry to say that. That's why I said the ferret was into everything. To his own detriment.

Other than the ferrent incident-we used to love watching the snake eat. We'd go to the pet shop and get rats and give them to the snake every few weeks for food. For those of you who don't know alot about snakes/or just rat lovers-this was for food, not sick fun.

My sister had a ferret when she was first married, all the stuff is true about them, she kept the cage clean but it still smelled. She got rid of it and got a dog. I personally love our little dog more than her ferret. I think they can be more affectionate and loving. And according to some of those stories a lot nicer to your things!!!! Our dog hasn't destroyed anything we own! and she's so happy to see you when you come home But it's your choice and if you get a ferret or whatever let us know and show us pictures
