I was wondering why would someone need more than one transplant? what can go wrong to make one need another?
I was under the i mpression that your lungs were no longer cf lungs once you had the tx...so baffled what could cuse someone to have another?
The only reason I can think is the lungs were rejecting, and wondering how many people have actually had to have more than one.

Just because you don't have CF doesn't mean you can't have numerous other problems.
Number one being rejection.
I know people who haven't stuck to the 12 hour medicine schedule, not taking meds at all, and their lung functions were going down. Because your immune system is compromised you could catch something.. there are a lot of reasons.
I know Risa has had 2 lung transplants... she'll probably answer eventually, might even have more detailed info than I can provide.

I had my first transplant which I had for nine and half Years to the day. I had great eight years but got chronic rejection. Some people stay stable with CR but I did not. This happens to some transplant patients. There are newer medications that are trying to prevent this from happening. With taking meds continuously day after day, they can weaken your kidneys and liver. Transplant patients can get complications other than rejection. It is important to live your life after transplantation as long as you take good care of your health.

My second transplant is going well thank G-d and I am not having the same problems as the first time around. Not all Transplant folks are elligible for a second transplant due to many factors.

when you are sick with Cf and there is an option for transplantation, it is worth the risk. There are never guarantees but the risks out weigh the inevitable living with CF end stage.

The two reasons for getting a nother lung tx is rejection and infection.

They say about 50% of the people will develop " chronic rejection" or " BOS" or "OB" at about the 5 year mark. I think it is actually a longer time now. Many of my friends are at t here 10 year mark and not having chronic. Also they are able to treat rejection better and better every day. And that can only improve I believe.

As to how many have had a 2nd tx.... ? I have no idea. I would guess under 100 in the U.S. How are they doing? No clue. The success rate is lower for the 2nd time than it is for the first time.

There is a woman who just had her 3rd lung tx in Wisconsin.

Hi Joanne

When I was going for another transplant I asked both centers that I was evaluated at what is the success rate for second time transplant with the aspect of longevity and they said it was the same. Perhaps you are talking about the surgery and recovery aspect. So far my second transplant is going much better.

Wow I am only one of one hundred? I believe this is a much higher number.

My boyfriend had his first transplant a little over 5 years ago and is now preparing to go back on the list for a second transplant. Hearing that you are doing so well with your second transplant Risa makes me feel a little better about the whole process.
