YES, they will tx you if you have MRSA. I don't think it's that big of a deal.
I think with cepacia it depends on the genomovar and what center you choose and their protocol. More and more centers are doing it, though

Yes you can get transplanted if you have MRSA and Cepacia.

I was just transplanted at Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville Florida and I cultured MRSA and Psuedo. I also know of one CF patient that was transplanted here at Jacksonville Mayo Clinic and they had Cepacia - they are doing very well too.

When I talked to the infectious disease doctors and the transplant doctors they said the main concern is when the bacteria is highly resistant to multiple antibiotics. So in that case if you culture pan resistant Psuedo it could be just as much of a problem as MRSA or Cepacia. It really just depends.

Also to let you know. The transplant doc at my center told me that it is typical for CF patients to culture the same bugs post transplant that they cultured pre transplant for at least the first few weeks or months. The reason for that being that they are replacing the old infected lungs but NOT the old infected trachea. The old trachea still has the mucus and secretions that were in the old lungs - so there is some residual bacteria left over. That is why in many cases they do bronchs to remove debris and other secretions to help get that crud out of there and keep an infection from settling in the new lungs.

Okay sorry if that was an overshare but YES back to the original question - YES you can get transplanted if you culture MRSA or Cepacia - it is just a matter of finding a center that is willing to transplant you and of course there are many OTHER factors that go into whether or not you would be eligible for transplant other than the bacteria you culture.

Take Care,
Lindsey
