Trouble with Helios O2

Hey, everyone... I gather there won't be too many on this site who use Helios O2 (that little fanny pack) when they exercise, but I recently started using it when I jog and have had some "issues" with it. Just curious if anyone else has this happen....

When I've been jogging for a bit and have a good sweat going on, the darn thing stops pulsing (the crap thing about Helios is that it ONLY pumps in O2 on inhalation and isn't the forced O2 like a tank or when hooked up at the hospital)... I've looked into what could be causing it and the literature I got says it could have condensation in it and won't pulsate if that's the case! WHAT?!? I'm using this for running so of course it will have condensation in it after a while... I'm just soooo disappointed. I even try to breathe in super hard to get it to pulse again and after awhile it just won't no matter how I try. As soon as I stop jogging for a few moments and dry off it starts pulsing again. I don't need O2 when I walk, so this is a real bummer to me... I need it when I JOG and RUN and if its going to stop working when I jog and run this thing is pointless. Anyone have this happen???

I know I could pull around a big 'ol tank to the gym, but let's be honest, it takes all I have to put this thing on my treadmill at Gold's Gym, and I'm certainly not going to cart around a TANK to put beside me when I run. And, I haven't the money for home gym equipment.

Urgh. I was soooo excited to get this Helios and start running, but now I feel even worse when I wear it cause its not only not pulsing, but it is theis tube in front of my nose, meaning its even HARDER to breathe! I'm sooo discouraged....

I am assuming you are referring to the liqud O2. I had a Helios unit before transplant. I didn't have the fanny pack one but the one that was a bit larger.

I don't know about yours but the one I had had a setting for continuous so that is what I used typically. Also the condensation tends to be a problem if you fill the tank RIGHT before you use it. You are supposed to fill the tank and let it sit for about 30 minutes before using it. I am not sure why but that should prevent the condensation from at least being as bad if not preventing it completely.

Did you try talking with the manufacturers? Perhaps they would be willing to "customize" it for you, so that problem won't occur, like maybe putting a "purge" function on it to expell the condensation....just a thought from a technical view.
Another point, based on what Lindsey wrote, is when the tank is fillled, the pressurized gas will tend to cause the tank to cool. (this is based on observation of basic pressurized tanks to expel the contents.)
I was thinking if there was a way to wrap a warm blanket around it, or some method to warm it up would also be possible to stop the problem with it not expelling O2 when you need it?

Thanks, guys... Yes, its the liquid O2, and probably is a bit bigger than a fanny pack, but that's what I think of it as... LOL... Its too heavy for a fanny though! LOL...

I do fill it about an hour before I use it (today I even waited about 2 hours... yes, it was still full, I checked... LOL) and let it sit on its base.

The condensation I'm talking about is in the tubing.. not the unit itself... though it did have some ice crystals around it today when I jogged, but haven't ever had that happen before when it stops pulsing.

Lindsey, it sounds like you were probably using the same sort of unit.. Why would mine not have a continuous feature??? They told me Helios is not continuous. I just have a dial that I turn from .25 to 4.0 liters and that's it. No other bells or whistles on mine.

Anyway, thanks for the info. Fred, I do think I'll try to call the manufacturer tomorrow... I don't know if they'll be able to do much but its worth a shot. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">
