Ok, what cough syrup method are you talking about??? Never heard of it, gawd, and I'm 35. My hubby and I have talked about it, but since I'm post transplant there are risks for me and my new lungs... Many things involved.

I am 36yo mom with CF. I conceived my son 4 years ago with a little help from infertility doctor. My mucous is so thick, the Robitussin method didnt work for me. We had to try IUI (Insemination) with Clomid (fertility medicine) 7 times before the doc decided that Clomid makes your mucous thicker. After that we switched to one cycle of the injectable fertility medicine (needles were small and didnt hurt a bit), did a hystersalpingogram (which cleared tubes of mucous) and insemination. Bam, I was pregnant.

Good luck to you. If you dont conceive soon, I suggest that you try help from a doctor.

Some women have used Robitussin to thin the cervical mucus. However, I recommend you consult your doctor for their advice before trying to get pregnant. Some women with CF can carry a baby with not much problems and others, have many problems or get really sick after having the baby and end up depending on others to take care of the child while they are sick. There is alot to think about when trying to bring a child into this world. Some have children and then depend on the Government to pay all the Medical bills, for their pregnancy and for the child. Which is wrong in my Opionion. If you feel your adult enough to have a child, you should be adult enough to pay for the child providing your own asstistance and not depening on the Government and taxpayers. You will have to see a High Risk OBGYN doctor, and also be followed very closely by ALL of your doctors. Some women with CF develope CF related diabetes during pregnancy, or Gestational Diabetes. If you already have CFRD, then you will need to see an Endocrinologist before getting pregnant because you want to make sure the baby will be safe. There is alot to consider, and if you plan on getting pregnant, I hope you have thought everything through before trying, and you need to know all the risks associated with Cystic Fibrosis and pregnancy. Also, you need to have Good Lung function, otherwise you will have problems during pregnancy with your lungs, as you will be breathing for two. I recommend planning the pregnancy with your doctors, and having it all mapped out. Such as maybe getting a clean out before starting trying to "concieve" and making sure your lungs are in the Best shape possible. Also, having enough money to support a child with your Husband, without Government assistance. I know there are situations when accidents DO happen, and some live in poverty and have to use Govn. Assistance but if you are planning on a baby, support it. So many need Government assitance and money is being sucked up by those who are irresponsbile (I know quite a few of them) or have babies and dont care cause they will get everything FREE FREE FREE!

You need to have your Husband checked for the CF gene before you get pregnant. If your husband is a carrier of the CF gene, there is a high risk that your child will also have CF. So, first, get your Husband tested for the CF genes. Most only test for the most common 75 which is scary cause there are over 1000 mutations and counting. I dont know if his insurance will cover it, but if not you will need to find a way to pay for it because its very important. If your husband DOES carry the CF gene, you may not want to play games with Lady Luck. You could also go through Invitro Fertilization and they could select his sperm that do not carry the CF gene, which is very expensive. However some insurance plans do cover Infertility treatment. I personally, do not want to have children, for many reasons. One because I dont want to bring a child into this world who may have to fight CF as I do. I have a Mild case of Cystic Fibrosis, but that doesnt mean my child would. Also, as the genes pass on, your grandchild could end up with CF...you never know. Just be safe and seek proper Medical treatment, and talk to your husband about the situation and discuss your options.

Hello i am currently trying to conceive at the moment, have spoken to my local doctor my specialist.
I am pretty fit with swimming and gym workouts, i am 32 i don't have cfrd, i have a very supportive husband.
At the moment i work fulltime.

This month is the first month that we have tried to concieve, he has had the gene testing done.

I have done alot of research on the net and there have been a few studies done with women having babies with CF and there are alot of good stories i know the USA done a studie on abut 1,000 women with cf and babies and it was very postive, saying that pregnancy had shown to have no effect on the cf person, and in fact that some where healthier.

If you like we could email each other and i could dig those web sites up

Spockal@bigpond.com.au

I still woulD like to hear from more women (with a postive attitude) i am not nieve to the possibitly that i could get sick etc,a but i chose to be positive there is too much negitivity associated with cf!!! where are the good stories. i know there are around!!!! I know if i keep fit and look after myself i'll live for alot longer then there will be a cure for me!!

All the best little whippet

hello, One of the most heated topics on this forum has to do with the decision to have a child (whether you have cf and want to get pregnant, if you already have a cf child and want to get pregnant again, or you don't want any at all). I have a son with cf and I am currently trying to have a second child. I have a serious digestive disease and wasn't sure I could even get pregnant, I was ecstatic when we found out I was pregnant. I don't have cf, but I was faced with similiar complications and issues. Finding out that my son has cf was devastating, but not the end of the world. We started trying for a second two years after our first was diagnosed. I ended up in the emergency room for abdominal pain (due to my disease) and when I told the doctor I was on clomid (a fertility drug to stimulate ovulation), He thought I was insane. He literally turned his head around and said "are you crazy, did you know your next kid could have cf too, have you even thought about this???" I replied "yes, I've been thinking about it every single day for the past two years" I have probably over analyzed every aspect of wanting another child and I know that this is the right descision for me. I guess what I am saying is that you will hear the good and bad, people have their opinions and that is the beauty of life. Someone told me "we'll the best thing that could happen is you could have a healthy little girl, so you can have one of each, and the worst that could happen is you could have another cf boy" I was shocked at the insensitivity, but I thought if the worst thing is having another cf boy, then I'd be lucky because my first (my little cf boy) is the most amazing and perfect thing in my life.

Now that i got that off my chest, I am still trying to concieve and I am on clomid to stimulate my ovaries. Clomid is a very common, inexpensive, oral prescription fertility drug that stimulates ovulation if you are not ovulating or are irregular. Too much clomid can cause your mucus to become thicker, so it is common practice(according to my obstetrican) to take an OTC cough syrup like Robitussin while you are ovulating. Too much clomid can also hyperstimulate the ovaries to release more than one egg , resulting in twins, triplets, etc...(make sure you are prepared for that possibility!!). If you are regular and healthy Robitussin (the expectorant, not the one that dries you up) should thin your mucous and help conception. This does work for many, many women. My OB/GYN is one of the best in Dallas and he suggested it to me. Good Luck and make the best decision for you and your future family!

To the last poster, Clomid can cause thicker mucous secretions, definetly something a CFer trying to get pregnant doesn't use. I you are still unsuccessful with this method, I would recommend trying another type of fertiltiy drug.
