What made them decide it was time, given that you feel fine? Pft's?
If you're prone to needing them every 6 months, and you've passed that mark, and going on vacation soon, perhaps it IS a good idea.
I used to think the same way: why go to an appt or have a tune-up if I'm not feeling bad. Then it was explained that in going to appts they can monitor your pft trends, and if they are starting to go down, "nip it in the bud" - especially if you are additionally losing a few pounds. No need to jump all over it, but yet you don't want to be sick, while on vacation.

It's a tough call. Even when you're feeling bad it's a tough call for me - I don't want to overuse the a/b's, but yet waiting will damage the lungs. It's just one of those balancing acts that we have to play, having CF. (probably some others with different illnesses have to do the weighing of pro's and con's too)

I know I would have a difficult time if they wanted me on a different floor too! Why are they doing that?

Hope all goes well, keep us posted.

When I was a college student, we planned pre-emptive tune-ups around my school schedule, even if I wasn't feeling "sick". I'm convinced that without them I would have had a much harder time health-wise.

I don't think any of us likes the idea of a tune up. It's hard enough to feel normal as it is without being tethered to an IV 3 times a day. However, I think you'll enjoy your trip to Florida much more if you're in tip top shape for it. An IV tuneup now may help keep you from feeling totally dragged out after your trip.

As for not being on the same floor, that's a tough transition too, but it needs to be done at some point, so why not do it now when you're not, as you say, "sick sick". I have a feeling you'll be much better able to cope with it now since all your energy reserves aren't being completely invested in fighting infection.

I say go for it, and use the time in the hospital to really truly rest up, and maybe even do a little planning for Florida. Good luck.

thanks for your reply,Sally and lightnlife, one part of the breathing test was a little down.... i guess it's better to stay on top of it all, but i dread going in, the nurses were switched to a different service... i'm really upset about that, have had them 11 years now... and i don't have a port anymore, so it's back to picc lines... once i get in and all set up i know it will be o.k., it's just all the anxity that i'm feeling untill that's over.... i'm waiting for a bed, dreading that phone call... Joni, I'm so sorry to read this. But I know you know that a maintainence trip is important. I don't like you going in either, darn it! How long do these things take usually? I wish I could visit you! Will you have a computer/laptop? I will miss you!

Well, at least you have your trip to look forward to when this is over and you will be in tip top shape to enjoy it. I hope all goes well. Will keep you in prayer.

If your numbers are down, then going for a tune -up is a good idea. I do my iv's at home and even so i still hem and haw about having to do it. It just messes up my routine, but after a while i realize its what i have to do to stay well and not let my numbers slip anymore. A BIG plus for you doing them now is.... you will be going on your trip feeling almost brand new
