Hi, I work in CF genetic research at Johns Hopkins. We are looking at genes to figure out which ones cause some people to be sicker than others, and some to be so much healthier. From this we learn more about CF - which will help us develop better treatments. We are looking at DNA from the blood of familes with 2 or more kids with CF (mom, dad, and at least 2 of their kids). Participants give about 2 tablespoons of blood each, and some questionnaires. Because families share so many genes, this puts us much closer to identifying the "modifiers" that we are looking for. So far 94 CF centers, 80 sets of twins and over 1016 brothers & sisters with CF , their moms & dads have contibuted to this effort. We now have the largest data bank of genetic information on a single gene inherited disorder in the world. (& we're using it!) If you and a brother or sister are affected by CF - please contact us to find out more and locate a participating center near you. We are using science to join in the effort to fight CF. Dave,
We were told that every CF center in Canada is participating, but maybe they mean pediatric. Check with your CF clinic nurse and they can give you more details. I just got my consent form from my daughters clinic this week at her visit, so if you haven't been to clinic recently maybe that is why you are not aware.
