Two Q's: Thyroid? & Testosterone?

I'm new to CF but 37 and diagnosed three years ago.

I just had a thyroid test and waiting results. My question is what's the link between the thyroid and CF? I hear alot of people here talk about it.

Also had a total testosterone blood test done and it turned up 92 in a range of 280-800. I had to take pain meds for a while. The doctor says it's likely due to that. My question is whether anybody else has low testosterone? I know CF can delay sexual maturety and so the testosterone levels are lower in CF patients. My doctor says low testosterone can cause "tired all the time" symtoms and what not.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Devin

I am unsure about the link between CF and the thyroid, but can say I have hypothyroidism.

I talked to the endocrinologist about it because at first I thought it may be something that was brought on by my transplant. She told me no that it was not transplant related. She said that most likely it was a combination of genetics and my being diabetic, as being diabetic predisposes you to thryoid issues.

I guess being that alot of CF adults tend to become diabetic that it could increase the prevalence of thyroid issues, but I do not know. I know that most of the people I know with CF do NOT have thyroid issues (at least the ones in my day to day life - on here that may be a different story).

Sorry I can't help with the testosterone question.

Take Care,
Lindsey

I'm don't know of a direct correlation between CF and thyroid problems, although there does seem to be a lot of anecdotal evidence. Nearly my entire family on my mother's side has had thyroid troubles. The point that I want to make is that almost all of those family members never saw any wild changes in TSH and T4. It was a very gradual change and I don't think my mum's TSH ever left normal values, despite having many malignant nodules. So, you probably want to get your thyroid checked regularly by a good ENT, so you can pick up on gradual changes. An ultrasound every once in awhile might not be a bad idea either.

As for the testosterone. I was having problems as well with lethargy and low sexual drive. I had a borderline low level once and tested WNL the 2nd time. The problem with testosterone is that it fluctuates quite a bit and catching it when its below normal limits seems difficult. As for my case, it seems to be transient. I have months where I feel fine and have energy and then I have some where I could care less. I would put money on my thyroid before I would my testosterone.

It's common for older male CFers to have low testosterone. Make sure you see an endo doctor about it and your thyroid. I'm on testosterone replacement therapy. I've tried it twice. The first time I didn't work out and didn't get much benefit. This time I"m working out more and maintaining muscle mass much better. I like it. It give me more strength to cough out the garbage. I bet your pain meds had very little to do with your testosterone levels.
