My daughter had unexplained hives 2 years ago. They happened right at the end of a cold virus. The doctor said she was allergic to the protein in the virus ( I was skeptical). They lasted for 6 weeks of and on. My gut was that she was having a reaction to gluten as a result of the virus as they seemed to appear after having gluten products during this time. It resolved though.

I have had hives for about a year. At first they were bad and very frequent (several times per day) but they have tapered off a lot and though they still occur daily they are mild and small. Topical benedryl has been my best friend through this! I saw an allergist who explained that hives can be caused by a host of different reasons and viruses are common causes. Typically they should go away w/in a day or so. But if they stick around they usually go away by 6 weeks. My year long case is not typical. I thought mine were due to stress as they appeared around the time I was having some extreme stress however resolving the stress did not resolve the hives.

Just put some benedryl or cortisone cream on them if they are bothering you and don't stress about it. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0"> The body will figure it out eventually.

My guess is HSP if they contain any spots that are more like little bruises. Along with the spots there were hives. You can see pictures in my blog on this site. This was about a month after contracting MRSA for the first time. I haven't had it since. I've heard 3% of the cf pop will experience this in their lifetime...usually associated with b. cepacia.

Another time I had hives, it was determined to be a tartrazine sensitivity or a breakout from fruit. Since I had not had a ton of fruit that could be the culprit and had had a lot of processed foods with yellow #5 we determined it was the tartrazine. I did a diet for a couple days of only a few "safe" foods for which I can not remember them all but they included sweet potatoes and chicken (with no butter). When you read about it online you will learn that tartrazine doesn't effect people right away. It builds up in the body's of some people and then when the body can handle no more it breaks out in hives. I have no idea why my body doesn't excret tartrazine like the rest of the world but I'm not alone. I avoid yellow #5 in large doses (ie. no yellow candies, no goldfish crackers, etc.)

LouLou I just looked and can't find the pictures from your blog. I would love to see them as I am afraid this is what I have. I get spots that eventually look like bruises and horrible joint pain. But as far as I know, I do not have b. cepacia. Do you know where you heard that it is associated with it? And what is HSP? This would be the answer to so many questions I have had about these darn spots!

Could also be bedbugs....sorry, but rashes often and hives often accompany with bedbugs bites. And it doesn't mean youd have a dirty home, they are very common nowadays. Regardless hope it resolves itself.
