ok, so i think im reacting to the fixomull too. unless the area has been so irritated that im going to react to anything that is put on. i took the fixomull off then because i was seeing ooze coming through and i thought the rash was uhh, erupting. i was right. its a weepy mess. im going to call the wound care nurse to see what else i can do. something like this could easily get infected and then in turn create an infection in the line.

Eesh...sounds awful! I would definately check on that. There has to be something you can use! I have sensitive skin, too. Usually turns really red for a few hours after the tegaderm is removed. But I've never had a reaction like that! I hope they can come up with something! Good luck!

ok well, no wound care nurse on today. rang to see if i could speak to someone in emergency but they put me through to some stupid healthcare line and they said to just go into emergency and not bother with a gp or anything like that, which is fair enough because they dont have the skills or supplies to help me. so i go to emergency. the rude cow of a nurse didnt even know what a port was and had no clue what i was talking about so i got a very low priority. she even ignored me and others if we asked her a question! 3 hours later and i still havent been seen and they say there are still more people before me. people who came in after me who had absolutely nothing wrong with them were going in before me, then coming out cheering "yay there was nothing wrong with me after all duuuh". its late, i was hungry, i couldnt stay there much longer anyway because my drugs are due so i left. they didnt care one bit that i said i was leaving. i was treated like a spec of dirt. when i got home i took off my temporary dressing which i 'made' which doesnt stick in the middle and there is ooze with god knows what bacteria in it all around the needle now. im going to leave it without a dressing. maybe tape a bit of gauze over it and thats it. not exactly safe but there is a far less chance of getting an infection that way. keeping a dressing on will just make it more damp and gross, bigger chance of bacteria breeding in that.

what a wonderful caring hospital mine is....

Kylie,

I am sorry you had such a horrible experience in the ER. I know it really stinks to wait and feel like no one cares. UGG...

As far as the dressing, I reacted last time to the tegraderm.. I hate it so much. My arm oozed and hurt terribly. My boss told me about a product that she used to use on her CF patients or anyone who had trouble with dressings. It is called IV 2000. I have not tried it yet but plan to next time I need a PICC.

As far as the dressing goes. I would use betadine or alcohol to clean the site. As you probably know start from the area on top of the wound and clean your way outward. In other words, push the germs away from site. We learned in school to go in circles around the wound working your way from the inside out.. I am sure I am not telling you something you don't know already.

As far as keeping it covered till you get some good medical attention, I think they sell stuff in the store that will help keep the area sterile.. I would not leave it open. Staph is all over your skin and it can very easily get into your system.

I hope you feel better soon,

Jennifer

Hi Kylie

I sure hope you get better soon. I would call your doctor tomorrow and perhaps he could tell you to come in to get it checked. Could they take a culture? I will be praying for you tonight.

do you mean iv 3000 jennifer? i was reacting to that too <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-sad.gif" border="0"> im going to see if a chemist around here has some dressing kits because this seriously needs a good cleanup and i will see if they have some non stick wound pads too because the gauze is getting stuck to the sores.

gaahh, all i wanted was 10 minutes of a nurses time. if i got that, i might actually have a clue as to what to do. im thinking i need some sort of antibiotic cream for it to prevent it from turning bad. maybe i should go back today and start demanding i see someone. maybe some nurses with manners will be on today.

....................................

ive just got back from going to a gp. of course, she didnt exactly know what was going on with my skin but she helped me to the best of her ability. she said it might actually be a fungal infection too because of the way its puffing up. it has been quite hot here so ive been sweating a bit so it makes sense. they have given it a good cleanup, put some daktarin and steroid cream around it and redressed it with some mesh stuff, gauze and a bit of tape. if it doesnt work then i will see the cf nurse tomorrow, but god knows what they will do!

Well, at least you finally got some attention for it. Hopefully they caught it before it infected the line. I think a fungal infection is easy to treat, isn't it? Don't know much about it myself, but I think that's what I've heard... At any rate, I hope this finally brings you some relief!

ok, final update on dressing situation for those who want to know [must be sick of this subject now eh]. seen the home nurse today and i cannot have ANY tape whatsoever on me at the moment as i am now reacting to micropore tape as well. arrrghh. anyway, there is no fungal infection and i just have to give it sterile salt water soaks to calm and clean it then put a layer of steriod cream on twice a day. i have some non stick pads to put on and a big bit of tubigrip type stuff. well, its actually dispoable pants with the middle cut off lol!!!! didnt you know that wearing disposable pants around your waist is the latest fashion? just need to be careful as to not rip it out as there is nothing securing it down. its starting to calm down already without the tape. just got to wait for all the sores to heal now *sigh*
