Well I had a chest x-ray on 1/30, went to the dr's on 1/31, and he said I had pneumonia. Its only the second time I had it, last time I was 12 or 14 maybe, so I didn't remember what it felt like. Anyway I went in the hosp on 2/1 and came out on 2/6. I am doing iv antibiotics at home and have a pic line in. I feel a lot better now, I'm eating more, and have more energy. The weird thing is my #'s on my pft's weren't that bad(looking back my #'s are the similar if not the same from 2000. I have to see my dr today, but I had another chest x-ray last night and my lower right lobe is still a little cloudy so I'm sure he'll say another week of antibiotics. Question for you all, have you ever gotten a cold while on iv antibiotics? Last time I was on them 4 years ago I seemed to have a cold too. I have a little bit of a sore throat but thats it. Its not a side effect of any of the meds I'm on either.

Kevin,

I have gotten a cold while on IV's. It is weird, you would think that should be impossible, but I have even spiked fevers while on them to. Just keep an eye on it and tell your doctor, they may want to extend the antibiotics for a little bit longer.

I have gotten stomach viruses and things while on IVs yes. Typically I do not get runny nose sore throat sick though. I would maybe talk to the doc about the sore throat. It may not be a direct side effect of any of the meds BUT if you are on prolonged antibiotic treatment you can get thrush - overgrowth of yeast in your mouth - and THAT can cause a sore throat and laryngitus type symtpoms. Well that is how it is for me at least. I ALWAYS get a slightly sore throat at first - then within a few days I start to get hoarse and lose my voice and after about 5 days I start to get white patches in my mouth and by that point the soreness has gotten so bad I can barely eat and swallow. They can give you a mouth wash, Mycelex tablets and/or Diflucan to take care of thrush if that is the problem.

Glad you are feeling better and hope you are off IVs in no time.

Take Care,
Lindsey
