Visiting in the NURSING HOME.

When my Grandmother was in a nursing home, I use to take my boys to see her a couple times a month. All the residents loved seeing kids and it made my Grandmother's day, even though she was 98 yrs old and suffering from dymensia......my son never acquired anything from these visits. But ask me if I would do it today, I would say a big NO. The longer he remains infection free the more I am cautious about it.

A couple of years ago his class was taking a field trip to the downtown homeless soup kitchen to help serve. I wrote a note and told them he did not have permission to go. They called me about why he could not be a part of such a "learning experience". I think they thought I was a heartless person and could care less for poor people. That's not entirely true, even though I am a conservative. I told them besides from the risk he was at from walking in a high crime rate neighborhood, I did not want him exposed to all these people that had who knows what type of germs. They said, "well he won't be touching them" Hello, TB is airborne.......I think this is one of the first and best decision I ever made for him and his CF.

If the MIL ever gets sent into a nursing home, I won't have to worry about getting germs from there, because I WON'T BE VISITING!!

But, since there's always the case in which the wife wants me to go, I'll definitely take the advice to bring a mask! prevent catching germs, rather than passing them, cause I currently DON'T have P.A. (or MRSA).

2perfectboys,
Good choice in not sending your children to where they would possibly be exposed to germs, in my opinion. I just hope the person who you talked with on the phone understands that point, and who thought that you were "heartless" had changed to understanding your point clearly. Though it seems in most cases, what someone else thinks of you, or your point of view, may not be important, but I was just thinking if the person who is in contact with your child frequently, happens to derrived a 'prejudgement' that the child's mom is bring him up to be 'heartless', I thought it'd be best to clear that point, for the sake of your child, eh? P.S. I like the "Hello, TB is airborne..." comment!

Fed,

Yes, I did go on to educate them about his CF and how TB was more prevelant in this type of population. It's funny some of the parents who sent their kids, got a huge dose of reality. They said their child would not go back and actually the christian school has not been back in two years. It was in a VERY high crime area, where murders and robberies are very prevelant. Plus he was only in first grade at the time, which I thought was really unappropriate. This was more of like a service project junior high or high school students would do.

Wow, that is very young to get started on volunteering in such places. Nothing like scaring your kids away from ever wanting to volunteer again. I love volunteering but I choose what I want to do and how many hours (not to mention what environment it is in). I understand that the school was trying to 'educate' the family but that just seems WAY too young.

Another thing about schools and CF stuff.....
My niece was in 1st grade I think and at her school they brought in a live turkey for the Thanksgiving bash. Not a big deal to others but to CF, poultry and other birds give off horrible viruses in their poop, etc. Nothing like having a crapping turkey to make my sister nervous. Why anyone would want a nasty dirty turkey in the classroom is beyond me. Once again, non CF'ers rarely think they way we CF'ers do.
