Vitamins

My insurance doesn't cover the source CF (or ADEK) so I pay out of pocket for them every month. Grrr... But, I guess I'd be paying nearly that for an OTC multivit nowadays anyway so I won't cry too loud. ha ha.

As far as the source CF or ADEKS, I was told we are supposed to take a CF formulated vit cause they've studied how it breaks down in CF fat cells (since we have a problem with this) and have also been able to pinpoint with more accuracy how much of each vitamin is actually getting to us. I think they're even ok'd by the FDA for this reason (?), whereas other OTC vits are not since there is no across-the-board level of accuracy or way of measuring dosages, etc. Someone correct me if I'm wrong here.

With regard to the C and Beta Carotene, etc. I agree to get enough of these things from source CF would be tough, so I too have been known to supplement with vit C in addition to my source CF vit. My docs have always been ok with this. Throughout the years I've supplemented with things I found lacking in my CF multivit (i.e. zinc - though now source CF has added zinc, which is nice). I just always tell my docs the vit and the dose and they check it for interactions, etc.

Anyway, that's just what I've done/heard. Not sure if its all spot on. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif" border="0">

My insurance doesnt cover any either, I buy the vitamax vitamins from the CF pharmancy. They are chewable and come in grape, cherry, and I think orange. I personally LOVE them, I grew up on regular ADEAK and HATE the taste it leaves in your mouth. I can double check the exact price but I think I pay like $19 for a month, maybe not even that, that seems a little high. But its my favorite one so to me its all worth it.

I take these b/c there were designed to be digested in "our" systems. Where as the pp said others are not. Also I make sure I get plenty of the other stuff from the food I eat, and for packing on the cals I get supplements through a gtube. I think getting vits from the source (food) is better than taking supplements.
