I know what "washing out the lungs" means. I had it done when I was very young by my CF Dr at the time. I was around 2-3 so I dont remember anything about it. From what I understand they basically put some sterile solution in your lungs, give very vigious CPT (although I dont think I got this step), and then suck it all out in hopes to bring out the mucus. My mom told me that my CF Dr was highly upset when he finished my procedure because based on how my lungs sounded, he expected to get a huge amount of mucus out. However, he did not get hardly any out. He was mad because he felt this would be a huge help for me but it actually just put me through unnecessary medical procedure. I believe they used it as one of the last options because around that time I had it I had been really sick (deadly sick), and they were unable to find medicine to help me so they tried the wash out. (later they did find a very old drug that work...that's why I'm here now). I think its a last resort type thing. I have seen on Discovery Health (or Discovery or TLC...a station like that) where they performed a lung wash out on someone. I dont think they had CF but I cant remember what they had or why they needed it.
