Water/Gas tax deductions

Hi, everyone! I've been on hiatus from the boards for a few months, but its nice to be back. I'm trying to limit my use of internet surfing and trying to limit my use of reading various boards, as it cuts into my work time (I work from home and was spending WAY too much time on the boards and surfing...lol)

Anyway, I just printed off the info. on medical tax deductions, but did not find anything about deducting things such as water (use 2 gallons every other day to boil my treatment parts) and gas (I have a gas stove). Does anyone know how to compute these figures? I assume they ARE legit deductions since we have to do this to keep our equipment sterile.

Anyway, its good to be back. I know I've missed a lot and have to read through all the posts to get caught up. Hope everyone is having a nice new year!

Thanks for any info...

Sonia, With a little internet research I'm sure you could come up with an equation to help you compute these figures. You'd need to look up (on your bill) the cost of water per gallon. If it is distributed to you in someother fashion (cubic inches?) you'll need to use a conversion site (google measurement conversion to find a site) and figure it to the gallons since this is how you know how much you use. Then multiple that amount by your rate.

The gas is a little more tricky. You'll need to look up what amount of gas is used when the stove top is on high (or whatever setting you use). This info. might be part of the oven's instruction manual. It will likely be a a kilowatt hour rating. Then multiple that by the amount of an hour x the number of times per week then x 4 (weeks in a month) and then 12 (months in a year).

I'd be interested to hear what sort of cost deductions you come up with. My guess is that it will be so little it might not be worth your time. If you don't pay for water or gas obviously you couldn't deduct it.

I did similar calculations to figure energy usage for my Vest and air compressor. I can say unless you are on 24-7 machines (O2 etc.) it's not worth your time. I think it was $35 per year approx. spent on these machines. Whoppee!

Thanks, Lauren...

Yeah, I kinda tried to figure stuff out on my own and found I could take about $1 off for water, which doesn't make sense to me and maybe I'm reading my bill wrong, cause our water is supposed to be some of the highest in the country living in the desert. Hmmm....

Yeah, electricity would be about $21 a year for the vest and about $5 a year for the nebulizer.

I'm thinking we're not going to make that 7.5% anyway... so, kinda bummed about that, but also glad that I'm NOT spending 7.5% on health stuff. I guess if it were closer to that percentage, I'd worry more about food and energy costs going into my equation. With Julie's help, I realized we spend UNDER the amount we should be on food every year! URGH. I knew I didn't eat enough.... <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

Anyway, thanks for your response. I appreciate it.

If you are receiving Medicare....dont forget your Medicare Part B premiums are counted. I know this can add up so thought I would throw it out there.

Melissa,
What about part D? I would assume so, since this IS my co-pay more or less (I would get more SDI if I didn't have this deduction.)
