weight loss in ivs

Hey guys-<br>
Quick question...anybody lose weight on iv abs?  I feel like I
should be on that show "The biggest Loser"  What in
the world?  I am on Primaxin (no diahrea) and Levaquin....
 this is sooo strange to me...normally I gain weight starting
the second week....I look like an anorexic.....HELP.<br>

When I was on IVs last May I lost about 10 pounds. This was due to the fact that my Cipro was laced with Dextrose and my sugars were off the charts. PLus I wasn't really eating the hospital food. I'm not sure how other IV meds would affect you though, as I've only ever been on Cipro and Tobra IV.

I would call the doctor today and like find out what is mixed with the antibiotic like Liz said. I would start to eat more protein with your carbs and try and also bring in more healthy fats. I think Cliff bars and nut butters with a little jelly on toast or a cracker is great complete protein snacks.

Hi Risa,

I just finished 3 weeks of IV's and lost 5 pounds. I went from 106 to about 101.5. I'm only 4'11" though so it doesn't look so bad. I always lose weight. If it's not from going to the bathroom 4 times a day than it's from throwing up.

Jenny,

call your doctor and find out why you are throwing up often. Maybe you have a stomach virus. The only time I throw up or I am about to but can control it is when I get my period sometimes I feel slightly off.

Worrying about weight gain just makes it worse. Taking action and eating little bits here and there helps a lot. The days that your stomach bothers you eat often but small tiny meals and take breaks. Always eat slowly and perhaps watch TV to distract you if you do not like eating. Hope you feel better

I agree with Liz. When I have had problems with weight loss it has been because they are mixing my meds with in dextrose instead of saline. I have to check every time I get my meds hooked up that they are in saline because it is hit or miss with our hospital sometimes depending on the pharmacist and how well they read my orders.

Also with vomitting the only time I have ever had vomitting on IV meds was when I was hooked up to IV fluids and they had me hooked up to dextrose for several days and didn't bother to make me aware of it. I was so sick I couldn't eat I couldn't figure out why my blood sugars were so high when I wasn't eating and I didn't know to take more insulin because of the dextrose (because I didn't know that they had me hooked up to it). I ended up throwing up for a few days and finaly I asked them to unhook my after about 3-4 days cause I wanted to shower and use the bathroom without being hooked to the IV. When they unhooked me I started to feel a bit better - in just 20 minutes. At that point I asked what they had me hooked up to - I honestly thought that they had enough sense to at least let the diabetic know that they were going to be pumping sugar water into their blood stream but I guess not. I finally realized what was going on and once I was able to compensate with insulin for the dextrose I stopped throwing up. Point to that rant ... high blood glucose caused my sickness and vomitting - so that may be something to check into as well. Especially if you are alot of steroids when you are on IVs.

Hi Risa,

I told my doctors, but they don't make a deal of it. They say since I have a history of H. pylori and am on decent doses of Prilosec everyday; that that's just how I am. On top of that, my period is really messed up. I am always on a 30-32 day cycle. Well, I was supposed to get it a little over a week ago, and I have yet to get it. I use to be on the pill, so I always got a period on IV's or orals. But I have now been off the pill for a year and this is the first time I've been on IV's since. I don't know what to expect. I thought I was getting it at first. I was on IV's for 2 weeks, and I started to have really bad cramping to the point where I was nearly doubled over for another week. Also, my nausea/vomiting was bad. I was never that bad, honestly, on IV's or any oral antibiotic. Maybe I would throw up once or twice and be sick to my stomach almost daily, but not like this past time. Anyway, my 3 week course of Tobi and Cefepine (sorry for spelling) ended Monday. Still no period. I have cramping, so I think it's coming, but it's nothing like it was 1.5 weeks ago. I see my CF doctor tomorrow for follow-up post IV's.

One other thing I forgot to mention, they tried me on Vancomyacin and Meropenium too before the Tobi and Cefapine. I was throwing up eight times a day for 2 days, and they had to change them. They tried loading me up on all kinds of anti-vomiting meds, but everything failed. It was horrible.
