WOW!!!

It was completely by accident!

My husband, Jake, works for a car dealership. He started there about 4 months ago. After he was there for about 2 months, I told them that I had CF. Jake and I had stopped in for his check, and I just mentioned it. Neither one of us knew that they donated money every year for the past 10 years to the CF Chapter of Berks County.

Well, this Saturday night, the CF Chapter of Berks County is thanking all these businesses throughout the whole county that have donated to our cause. Jake's workplace is one of the invited businesses. They have 5 tickets.

Well, I got this call yesterday around 4:00 pm from his job asking me if Jake and I would like to attend. They knew I had CF and thought that maybe I'd really like to go. I WAS FLATTERED! That leaves them with only 3 tickets. The owner and two other managers would go with us! Talk about first-class.

I have NEVER IN MY LIFE attended anything like this before. But before I said "yes", I wanted to find out if other CF patients would be there. I'm VERY CAREFUL when it comes to the exposure to other CF patients. I'm always afraid of picking something up. The CF Chapter said, "no". I could attend as long as I didn't have Cepacia, which I don't. They said a few CF parents will be there but not many, just businesses.

I said, "count me in"! I'm soooooo nervous and excited all at the same time. I have been asked to speak too in front of a few hundreds of people. I will. Of course, I thank everyone from the bottom of my heart BUT TALK ABOUT MY NERVES BEING BAD......... These people make how many millions/billions per year. WOW! I feel like I'll pass out. My stomach has had butterflies since yesterday.

And then, I say offer information to other CF families. Oh my God!!! It's a completely formal event. I'm not sure what I'm going to wear. I really don't have appropriate clothes for an event like this. I should probably wear a dress, but I don't own more than 2, which are both summer-type. Oh my God!!! Okay, okay, okay. Take a deep breath. Well, any ideas!!!!!!!!!

WHAT AN OPPORTUNITY!!!

Jenny,

That's awesome! What an opportunity to help your husband shine. How long does your speech have to be? I've written a few if you need help let me know. My most recent on is on my blog. I delivered it at a golf event.

If it's just a quick thank you that's not too difficult but if you it's more than a few lines I'd prepare something if I were you. I'm not trying to scare you. I get stage fright if I'm not prepared though maybe you strive in the spotlight.

One things for sure. They've asked you so last minute they can't expect much. Not like lightnlife's recent wonderful speech and performance. Thanks for getting out and spreading the knowledge of cf. Those people in attendance are going to be so happy to see a healthy happy person they are helping. Many of them have never met someone with cf likely.

As for attire. Yeah, you'll want to get a dress if it's as dressy as it sounds. I always say better to be over dresssed than under. It will boost your confidence.

Good luck and keep us posted how it goes.

WHAT AN OPPORTUNITY!!!

Funny thing about me...
I took a speech class - big time commitment and totally worth doing - Toastmasters.org
The reason I took it was because I was so fearful about speaking about cf to a crowd. I waited until I'd prepared and delivered many
none cf speeches at Toastmasters before attempting a cf speech. After about 6 months I wrote a speech about cf and the lessons it's taught me or something like that and once again I teared up like I always do when I speak about cf. All I can figure is that I'm so optimistic in my daily life and do not have self pity for all I do for my cf that when I turn the tables and talk real about cf to a strange crowd I get very emotional. Anyway I guess it's not unusual. I've talked about it on here before and I know coltsfan said this happens to her too sometimes.

Again another reason I like to prepare.

Like I know not to talk about having babies. One time I was speaking to a rough outline and got to the point where I mentioned my hope for having children in the future and how I didn't know if it would be possible....and whahhaaaa! I started balling right there at the podium. I gained composure very quickly so I'm sure it wasn't as bad as it felt to me.

I'm not sure to this day (after many a course in public speaking) why I get this way. I hope you don't deal with this but don't say I didn't warn you :)

WHAT AN OPPORTUNITY!!!

How amazing! Congrats! What an honor! Also, this sounds like the perfect reason to go shopping...after all, you need a dress...and shoes...a purse...lol. Do you have a Davids Bridal in town? They might have some formal, but not flashy dresses on sale. I got one to wear on tv at a CF Telethon last year and it can be worn to other formal events, like weddings without drawing too much attention. I got mine for $130 but I have seen others for $99...depends on the style and your size. Good luck on the speech!!! Have fun
