I am a manager of health policy for our state's Medicaid program, currently working on a proposal to provide health insurance for all of the children in our state. For seven years prior to that I was the health policy advisor to the Governor. My job involves research, anaysis, writing, and tons of meetings with staff, legislators, health providers, hospital execs, etc. I've been on oxygen 24/7 for the past 2 or so years, so everyone has gotten used to having me and "my buddy" show up at meetings. I LOVE my work. Technology has been a blessing, as I don't have to travel to so many meetings any more - thank goodness for teleconferencing. Also, I am able to hook directly into my work computer from home, so when I need to take extra time during flareups for IVs or extra vest time, I can work from home all or part of a day and not have to use all my sick leave.

Where did you get your degree Lauren? I usually have a few students interested in Ind. Design but there are so few degree programs. One is at Syracuse right now.

Jane, I got my BFA in Industrial Design from the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign. Tell your students to check out idsa.org and core77.com - two great sites for ID.

I graduated with an Associates of Science in Electronics Technology, and had actually been involved with electronics since my last two years in high school--under the vocational training program. Because of my love for cars, I wanted to be a mechanic, but my dad suggested electronics, so I'd work in a cleaner environment...I think he was referring to not being exposed to gas fumes, because I've never worked at a place that was actually "clean".
Before I could get my Bachelors, uncontrolled events prevented me from continuing my education, yet I was able to get along with my Associates.
However, I now find myself unemployed in Japan, and can't find a job which suits my qualifications...one reason is that they keep rejecting me, the other reason is because commuting would take way to long (an hour to two hours).
This puts me in a pinch because most of the jobs available require adequate knowledge in software design, which I had never specialized in, I was always dealing with hardware, with a little exposure to the software side.
