So, this morning at church I started out of the blue coughing up bright red blood! This is only the 2nd time in my life that this has ever happened to me (the first time was in February), and it was definitely more than the first time. I think overall I probably coughed up 2 tablespoons. I can't remember everything I did in February, so here are my questions...<div><br></div><div>-Do you stop the vest? I remember stopping hypertonic but I can't remember if I stopped the Vest.</div><div>-What about TOBI? I was planning to start TOBI tomorrow, should I hold off a few days?</div><div>-Do you call your doctor? (I'm planning to tomorrow, but just wondering if everyone does this or not.) I've generally heard not to worry about anything under 2 tbsp, so since that was about all I coughed up and it did eventually stop, I'm trying to play it cool. (Though I admit, it freaks me out!)</div><div><br></div><div>Any other tips? I drank a bunch of cold water and that helped.</div>

Stop your breathing treatments/vest/anything else that could possibly be causing the irritant, up your Vitamin K intake, and rest! Hope you feel better real soon!

This same thing just happened to my 14 year old son Friday night. It has happened in the past but those times he was sick, coughing a lot. This time he seemed to actually be doing well , although he had just done a pulmozyme neb so that may have had something to do with it for him. Anyway, when this happened last time we were told to stop all nebs and the vest for 48 hours. Then if there hasn't been any more bleeding after 48 hours start the vest, and then nebs. I would stop everything and definitely call your MD in the morning and see how he/she wants you to proceed. If you aren't already on a vitamin K supplement I would ask about that when you call. My son takes the ADEK twice a day and 5mg vitamin k 1x per day.

I am planning to stop everything except Albuterol until I talk to them tomorrow. I think I'll add in a K too... I do a CF multi, but maybe I need more.

Yeah, the nice thing about Vitamin K is that it helps with blood clotting and is a natural antibleeding vitamin. If I'm having trouble with hemo or streaking I pop 2 per day. You can get it for $3.99 at Whole Foods.

Another thing I do is to remove all my triggers--they include caffeine, pulmozyme, stress. Taking advil is said to cause it, too.

The best thing to do is trouble shoot, and experiment with what works for you. It's taken me awhile to find the right combo for me, but I never really worry too much about it--just a normal part of CF <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">
