What do you do for hemoptysis?

Yeah, the nice thing about Vitamin K is that it helps with blood clotting and is a natural antibleeding vitamin. If I'm having trouble with hemo or streaking I pop 2 per day. You can get it for $3.99 at Whole Foods.

<br />Another thing I do is to remove all my triggers--they include caffeine, pulmozyme, stress. Taking advil is said to cause it, too.

<br />The best thing to do is trouble shoot, and experiment with what works for you. It's taken me awhile to find the right combo for me, but I never really worry too much about it--just a normal part of CF <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

I wouldn't really worry except that it is VERY unusual for me, plus it has come at the end of 2 weeks of worsening cough/mucus/etc. So that does worry me. Guess we will see though! My only concern about taking extra K... I have a port, so I've always been super freaked out about blood clots. Will Vitamin K make my chances of that higher?

And yes, advil thins your blood so it would be worse. My two episodes have seemed completely random! I don't even drink caffeine, ever! <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif" border="0">

Awww Cindy <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-sad.gif" border="0"> So sorry to hear all that you are going through!! <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-sad.gif" border="0"> Will inbox you k...keep your chin up girly..I know it's hard..but I believe you! <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0"> Rest heaps and I find water helps and enerlyte (Electrolytes sachets you can get from your local pharmacy)-always helps me wake up feeling a little better & keeps my lungs liquidly...which makes it easier to do Chest physio therapy sessions afterwards <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif" border="0"> Well that's what work for me anyway... <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

OK here is another question. Has anyone ever run a fever after hemoptysis? I spiked a high (for me) fever last night and still have one today. I realized as I was tossing and turning last night that this same thing happened after my last hemoptysis, but I was on IVs at the time so I figured the fever was from the IVs. Both times it's also been accompanied by a really upset stomach the next day... I don't know if that is because of the fever, or because maybe I swallowed some blood?

Just wondering if anyone else has experienced this....

I've had it a few times as well, the first was in the middle of my sleep I woke up with gurgling in my chest and it made me caugh, rolled over and spit in the garbage and it looked unusually dark and liquidy. I took a breath and the gurgling was still there so I thought this is weird and something made me get up and turn on the light only to find I had spat out a mouthful of blood into the garbage.  Needless to say it freaked me out and I went to the hospital straight away.<br><br>I researched it after and came across where someone said to take l-lysine when you get it to help get it under control especially if it is a bad bleed.  What the lysine does is constrict the small capillaries somewhat to restrict the blood flow to the broken vessel/vessels and give a better chance for it to clot and close off quicker.  I have done that with the few I've had since and it has helped stop them rather quickly.<br>

In addition to the suggestions above, I found that placing a bag of frozen peas on my chest helps stop the bleed more quickly. I say to my hubby, "Get the Peas!!!!"

I agree, adding ice or frozen veggies does seem to help. Before my transplant I would get bad bleeds from time to time, but taking ADEKS vitamins (Since they have a lot of K, for clotting) regularly, reduced the severity of the bleeding.

Hi Cindy, <div><br></div><div> Hemoptysis is a scary thing.. First off I always call my Dr.  Because I am on blood thinners it can get pretty hairy .. </div><div><br></div><div> They usually have me stop Vest & Albuterol..   Sometimes they add vitamin K ..</div><div><br></div><div>  The last time I had it it was pretty bad (at least for me) so I was hospitalized (it ws over a cup) .. </div><div> I have heard that it can coincide w/ a woman's menstrual cycle.. </div><div> </div><div> I usually rest as much as possible & pray !!  I hope you are feeling better soon..</div><div><br></div><div>  <3  joni </div>
