What do you think?

Hi!

OK, so I've been really feeling congested in my chest lately. Lots of coughing throughout the day that brings up more gunk than usual. My question is: Is this a good or bad thing? The reason I ask is cause we're always told that coughing is "good" for us to bring stuff up. Well, I'm bringing it up alright! But, more than usual. Do you think it is cause I'm sick, or cause, for some reason (perhaps my new weight lifting regimine - ha ha) I'm just able to cough up more lately? I'm not having ANY other symptoms other than a really productive cough, that would lead me to think I'm sicker.... I go to the gym, eat well, and have lots of energy.

So, what are your opinions of this?

Thanks,
Sonia

I have actually asked my doc a similar question to this about whether alot of coughing was good or bad. His response was that if you can tell a change in the coloring/taste of the mucus and the quantity, how difficult it is for you to cough up what you are coughing up and if you are feeling overall "not well" there is probably an infection.

My personal opinion, I would venture to say your working out (especially if you are doing any aerobic stuff) probably would have some affect on you coughing more. I know when I work out regularly I see an increase in coughing and the amount of what I cough up for several days - after a week or two, depending on how vigorous the work outs, I start to see the coughing and all level out again. Obviously though if you don't feel well then it may be more than just the exercise and if you are worried about it - seeing the doc or giving them a call to ask there opinion is never a bad thing.

Thanks for your response!

So, did your doc say if it was actually EASIER to cough up, that's bad too?

I don't feel bad really... a little more "crackling" cause of the crap I'm coughing up, but I'm rarely coughing and NOT getting something up, which is unusual for me.

Hey,
He did not say that if it was easier to get stuff up that I was necesarily sick. I know for me when I get sick I have to cough for what seems like forever to get anything up. I know sometimes when you(a person) are sick it is easier to get stuff up because there is more to get up, but I think it was more like in combination with everything (i.e. color, quantity and how you feel). I personally think it is best if you are able to get stuff up rather easily - less strain on your body in regards to coughing and all.

I do hope that it levels out for you though and that you are not getting sick or anything like that. How long have you been working out or doing what exercise you are doing? Also have you started any new meds? if you have that med may be causing it too, not necessarily in a bad way. I know that when I used to go on TOBI I coughed what felt like all the time during the month that I was on it, so maybe there are some other meds that could cause that reaction in you, or any person for that matter.

Thanks, Lindsey!

I've been working out for a long time... usually I just did cardio though, and now I'm adding weight training to my routine. So, lately, I've done a lot of chest and back lifts and perhaps I am just strengthening my lung tissue/muscles and am better able to cough stuff out. Like I said, I just don't feel "tune up" sick yet. I also had those results on TOBI. I usually felt so short of breath sometimes I could hardly walk! But, now I'm on colistyn and its worked much better for me for the last 2 years or so.

Thanks again for your insight. I appreciate it!
