What does it mean?

So today I woke up and blew my nose cause it felt kinda stuffy and I blew out what resembled green mucus plugs that I cough out once in a great while. Well, needless to say, I'm not stuffy anymore and my nose is now blowing completely clear. I don't usually have any sinus issues with my CF (the lungs and pancrease give me a hard enough time! lol) so I was shocked when I blew the green hard little "pebbles" today.

What does this mean? Why would these be in my nose? And, why would I now feel totally fine and be blowing nothing but clear? Do they lodge there from your lungs somehow at night? Or, is it a fluke thing? I certainly don't think this warrants a Dr. appt., cause like I said I feel great and have no pressure, plugged nose, nasal drip, nothin'. So, I was totally shocked when this happened. My lungs have been feeling pretty much the same as usual too. So, what do you think? Anyone had this happen? Anyone know what causes it?

Thanks!

Hey ladybug, I hope you are having a good Friday other than your green mucus experience! I'm figuring that you don't have much sinus involvement much like I don't. So we don't regularly blow 'color' out of our nose but do cough up colored lung mucus. Well this is my hypothesis and take it for what it's worth. I believe when I have a bad cough some of that mucus propells into my sinuses and I get these small green, really foul tasting I might add, seed size nuggets of green that come down days, weeks or months later. Then another thing that happens is after I have a head cold and its out of my head but in my lungs 2-3 weeks after original infection I'm blowing clear and there comes what's sort of the last plug of 'sick' mucus. Sounds similar to your situation.

Hoep this wasn't too gross!

Hi there,

I am taking it by your post that you do not experience any nasal stuffiness or anything. If you DO then it may be possible that stuff is draining from your nose to your throat also. So you think you are coughing stuff up from your lungs, but in actuality it is drainage coming from your nose.

I say that because I have at times when I have a stuffy nose or an uncomfy feeling in my nose coughed up some pretty nasty plug type things - I do not feel they are from my lungs when I get them up because I do not get the normal tightness or congested feeling in my lungs that I usually have when I cough stuff up.

Just a thought.

Thanks, guys!

Does anyone know if you can have a sinus infection without being plugged up or blowing out green all the time??? MY DH just got home and I explained my symptoms and he said you can have a sinus infection and not feel any symptoms in your nose.... I do notice a bit of drainage down the back of my throat as the day wears on, but again absolutely NO pain, pressure, stuffiness. or anything like that..... so, could it STILL be a sinus infection really!?

Ya I hardly blow my nose or have sinus issues anymore.

Every once in a while I get this sand-paper texture dark green crub come out of my nose or drip down my nose to my throat (it tastes HORRIBLE and it's almost impossible to get the taste away).

I wouldn't worry about unless your lungs or sinuses show other symptoms.

Bottom line is that CF sinuses can get sealed off due to inflammation and that lack of air can cause anaerobic bacteria to grow.

I get these coming out from time to time. I had two nasal polyp surgeries at the age of 12 and 14, but haven't really had any nasal problems since that time and now I am 39. I can usually feel them in my nose, a weird kind of pressure when I blow my nose. I think I usually get these because I haven't been drinking enough water or am experiencing dehydration. I think they start coming out when you have gotten alot of liquids in your system and they seemingly dislodge themselves. Or they come up with the heavy pressure of coughing and blowing ones' nose. I haven't developed any more sinus infections or polyps, but have just always had these since then. I think it's a great thing when you do get them out of course. A strange feeling of accomplishment somehow.

I would say if this continues or you start to feel really stuffed up but aren't blowing much out no matter what color it is then you probably have a sinus infection. Having said that, I've had a couple similar experiences, and I was fine after ward. With Cfers and all of our weird mucus issues its hard to say why it happens.
