What % HTS do you use?

Hi there,

I am not using the HTS now but I wanted to comment since my experience was a little different than everyone elses.

When I first started using HS I used a 3% solution. I coughed enough with that - for me it was enough anyway. When I changed docs last summer my new doc upped me to 7% and I had a really hard time. I ended up having to modify the dose to about 5%. The 5% was a good balance for me - it had me coughing plenty enough for me AND my doc and getting enough stuff up BUT it did not make me wheeze and get the tightness that the 7% did.

So IF you try the 7% and it is too much maybe you can just dilute it a little more to give a 5% solution. Just an idea.

Take Care,

7% as well. It makes me cough so much sometimes that I throw up. I can't count the times i've been talking to Caitlin on AIM (woo hoo Neb Time!) and i just barf all over the place. Thank god for spit cups.

That was really off topic too. Sorry. So yeah, 7% for me!

Kj uses 7%

She was on 3% when she was little.

She doesn't cough that much with it and lately isn't bringing up much mucus at all.

I use 10%.

When I first started, I was using 7%, but gradually became to tolerate it very easily, and wasn't coughing much. So I emailed the principle investigator of the UNC study, and asked him how 7% was picked, and about moving up to the higher %, and received the following response:

-------------
Regarding the concentration that was studied, 7% was a compromise between a dose that was most effective and what is well tolerated (in short term studies of mucociliary clearance - where 0.9%, 3%, 7%, and 12% were tested - 7% and 12% were similar, and better than 0.9 and 3%, but 12% wasn't well tolerated). Therefore, if concentrations higher than 7% are well tolerated in an individual, we have often gone up to 10% with further benefit (if you tolerate 7% easily, you probably will tolerate 10%, but obviously should do this in conjunction with your CF doctor). Your instinct to increase to 10% is probably a good one, therefore...
-------------

After chatting with my doc I immediately started using 10%, and have been thrilled. Its makes me cough a lot - its a workout, but its worth it.
