what to do when you can't poo...

hey all!

So, I've been in and out of the hospital for the last few weeks and I've been on IV tigecycline and cefoxitin, among other oral abx. I developed some diarrhea after being on these IVs for about a week or so. Doc put me on acidophillus and I've been trying to eat at least one yogurt a day.

I started developing really bad belly pain a few days ago and just decided to keep an eye on it. I ended up in the ER a day ago for something un-CF related. While there, I mentioned the belly pain I was having, so they did an abdominal xray. I was beginning to get concerned that I had the beginnings of a bowel obstruction. The conclusion? I'm full of stool. That's why my belly hurts and that's more than likely the reason for the diarrhea (whatever can get past the dormant stool is mixed with water in an attempt for the body to get things moving). I was given a stool softener-that did nothing. Upon coming home, I took a few laxatives-that did nothing. I've had several cups of coffee-that did nothing. I've eaten more yogurt and tried to stay away from super salty things and dairy (binding stuff)-that has done nothing.

Has anyone had this problem? What else can I do to get some relief? My belly is so crampy and I'm so bloated. I just want to go to the bathroom and I can't!!

You should tell your CF doc, a lot of times they'll prescribe Miralax or something similar when you're having problems like that.

With DS we usually used Milk of Magnesia, but when he had his obstruction a couple years ago they tried miralax, go-lytely, mucomyst, gastrographin enemas before things finally broke loose.

1. Drink tons. 2. Drink tons.-really, that should help. getting that backed up is sucking the moisture out of your gi tract.
And yes, I ditto calling the cf docs. At the very least they'll want you to go on Miralax. If that doesn't work maybe you need a good clean out. Those antibiotics wreak havoc on your gut.
And this may sound funny, but when I relax I can go easier. If I am rushing around, or heading out the door I can't go. So I'd drink a good big glass of juice or water tonight, get up tomorrow, drink a cold glass of water, followed by a strong cup of coffee. Then sit back, read and relax. Then call the docs.

btw-personally, I wouldn't start using gas x, milk of mag, or tons of different over the counter stuff. Depending on your body it can just make things worse. If this is all new to you and its been days and days since a good bm-its time to call in the big guns.

I just went through all this a few weeks back and was blocked up as well, went to the GI doctor and he gave me Go-Lightly, and boy did I go... but my belly ache was gone by the 2nd day and I've felt so much better since. But again yr. on IV's so not sure this is a good idea. I drink prune juice everyday which helps and also I do use Miralax in abt 5oz of
cranberry juice, occassionally. good luck hope your tummy is better soon. Pat/55-CF

Do you drink coffee or tea in the morning and at night? If you do go and buy "BENEFIBRE". It is a fibre supplement and I too have digestive issues and every morning and night I mix 2 teaspoons in with my tea and I now can go regularily. Benefibre does NOT cause bloating or cramping and there is NO taste. It dissolves best in a HOT liquid. Hot Chocolate will work too! I have NO more issues with NOT being able to go potty!
