i worked in a dept store and never had any problems. i dealt with the public all the time and didnt get more germs than normal. like lots of people have said- whats he interested in doing when he's older? because that could be a good start, and quite possibly he will be working with the general public. i work in the juvenile justice system now...some of the people we deal with are pretty damn gross scum of the earth kind of people (and thats putting it nicely!) and i've still had no problems with germs etc.

Good point, Debbie! Luckily, I had such mild CF back then that I only coughed when I had a cold. And maybe I was oblivious, but germ-phobia wasn't such a big deal back then (mid-80's).

I was thinking on this thread yesterday & have to say that almost any job will have some exposure to germs. In light of this, as others have said, he should do what he enjoys and the enjoyment he gets from the job & the comraderie (sp) of working with others will mean a lot to him.

I did babysitting sometimes when i was younger.. then my first "job" was a volunteer job that i did for three years i worked at a place called Erie Wildlife Rescue.. they took in sick and injured wild animals and took care of them until they were healthy and released them again... I got my pre-vax for rabis because of it... there were plenty of germs going around there and i didn't get anymore sick than usual working there... it infact was a great job and i loved it so much i have over 500 volunteer hours and if i lived in the same city would do it again... but then my real job after that was working at a movie theater Silver City i worked in the New York Fries part.. it was greasy and everything but I had a lot of fun... i eventually worked floor, and did the consession stand and stuff too there... then i worked at another movie theater, then at Tim Hortons (which sucked a lot.. i really hated it), now i work at a call center, i'm a relay operator... as far as i know i haven't caught anything from working in customer/food service over the years.

I mostly did babysitting jobs when i was younger. I was a school bus driver for a long time, was diagnosed at 44 yrs. old. A couple of years after, that and the fact that i was getting sick more frequently i said to myself are you CRAZY driving a 72 passenger bus load of coughing and sneezing children. Iv'e been on disabily since then... Joni 54 soon to be 55 y/o w c/f
