Hey there.
I have read some of the replies, but not all so this may have already been stated.
I agree with most people in saying that a sinus infection can really get you down. For one it can definitely make you not want to eat. I told my mom they used to make me sick to my stomach cause I would have the drainage and it would go into my stomach and almost like my body was digesting the nasty bacteria (that may or may not be the case) but I would just feel disgusting. I had this nagging nausea feeling and would have a hard time eating. When I got that way the best thing for me to eat was cold stuff like ice cream or popsicles. I know every kids dream but that carried into adulthood. If I was nauseous I just ate something extremely cold and it helped me to feel better.
Another thing to think on in regards to his appettite is this. Not only can a sinus infection zap your energy or make you nauseous, but it can affect the way food tastes to you. I used to get a coating of crud on my tongue when my sinus infections were at their worst. Foods that I normally enjoyed made me sick. That may be part of the problem too. I found that during those times I would just have to experiment with different foods to find something that I could enjoy and thus give me a desire to eat. The odd thing about it was that when I was sick I was eating foods that I ate at NO other time. When I was healthy I would go back to eating my normal diet and the foods that I resorted too while sick made me gag because of the taste.
Other than that I also thought of the same - O2 sats cause that can cause you some issues with energy. It may be worth having them check his O2 sats at night while he is sleeping. When I started having O2 issues I would wake up exhausted and it would come and go throughout the day even though my sats were in the 90s throughout the day. I doubt that is the case - BUT it is something to maybe look into down the road.
Also I thought of the diabetes. I know for me I am already diagnosed with CFRD but whenever my blood sugar is high and before I was diagnosed Iwas constantly exhausted but it was a different kind of exhausted. It was normally within an hour or so after meals and it didn't matter what I did to stay awake I would barely be able to hold my eyes open and most of the times would just dose off.
Other thoughts in regards to the liver enzymes - follow up on that. Hopefully it is nothing, BUT if they do more tests and can't really find anything have them check his gallbladder. I know he is young and not the typical patient to have gallbladder problems but that can really affect a person as well. Also I know for me MY gallbladder issues were picked up after I had abnormal labwork showing that I had elevated liver enzymes. I would get nauseous and would often time vomit. I had a hard time sleeping, would at times have a hard time breathing along with other things. It is just something to keep in mind. Though again probably unlikely just another possibility.
I would put my money on the sinus infection being the problem but the others are possible avenues to look into if the sinus thing doesn't appear to be the problem causer.
Also to add - something that has helped me tremendously and I think every CFer would benefit from is Sinus Rinses. I started doing them after I had my transplant and have been overjoyed with the results. I went from being told that I would possibly need to consider sinus surgery .. again (only 6 months after my initial sinus surgery) to doing sinus rinses for 6 months and being told that my sinuses are in spectacular shape and I was able to "dodge a bullet" with the sinus surgery. Maybe if you were to talk to your docs about something like that for your son that may help. I know of a 4 yr old that started doing them and they have really worked wonders for her (also with CF).
Take Care,
Lindsey
