Word of Thumb

This maybe a silly question but whenever I get a cold that settles in my lungs my husband gets on my case about getting an abx. on board. So when you catch a cold, when is the point you turn to antibiotics. Do you give it a week or two to see if it goes away or the moment you know you have one and it settles do you start. I know every case is different but I'm wondering if I'm really that "special".

Hello!

I actually have asked a very similar question on here in the past... probably more than once. LOL.

I personally do NOT go on abx right away with a cold. I wait and see if my immune system can "kick it" on its own. Usually I go through the whole stuffy nose/head and then it moves into my chest and then if it hangs around there for more than a week or so and doesn't seem to be getting better, I usually go on abx at that time. I can only do IV as I'm resistant to oral, so this is usually a big decision and causes quite a bit of angst.

At times, when I don't get the results I'd expected on IVs, I beat myself up cause it was likely just the virus and not necessarily time for abx.

But, I've also heard that some docs advocate going on IV meds whenever it moves into one's chest cause it can cause problems and permanant scarring, etc. if you let it fester. Even viruses hanging around in our lungs can supposedly make it so our bodies/lungs can't fight off the p.a. or whatever other infections we always have.

This is really a hot topic for me. I'd love to hear how others know its "time" for a clean out after a cold....

These days i call my nurse when i start feeling a head cold and let them know whats going on. He always tells me to call back if things seem to progress.Since i am on oral antibiotics all the time (365 days a year ,prophilactically for the cepacia) If i feel it moving down to my chest i get an iv right away. Years ago, i would let it go and had a wait and see approach, but with having cepacia 12 years now i can't afford being relaxed about it anymore and need to take more aggressive action. I think it all depends on where you are at with your cf. When i had pft's in the high 90's and was in generally better health, i was able to wait it out and the cold pretty much always went away on its own without ever causing any problems (God i miss those days). These days with lower pft's and cepacia i dont want to wait and allow trouble to brew.
