Work and missed time

My son has CF and I've missed a lot of time at work. I've been working there for 6 months and when I had my interview they said it wouldn't be a problem, I explained that he had Dr. visits on the last tuesday a month and sometimes would have to take time off for him being sick etc. They said no problem.

Well here it is a day where I'm sick as a dog, and now my supervisor is saying I've taken too much time off, whatever time I have taken off I have either made it up or used vacation time. The only other time than today where I didnt have the time to make it up was when I had surgery 2 months ago! I was out for a week and only had time for 2 out of 4 days vacation time saved up.

I dont want to lose my job I love it there the ppl are great and I really like the work. But if it's going to interfer w/ my sons health and mine is it really worth it?? It just sucks cuz my husband and I just got on track w/ all the bills after a year or so of stress!!

I was wondering if there was a 504 plan for the caregivers of children w/ CF, my son has one for school so we're all set there. But if I lose my job it's really going to suck! There is a family leave act here in VT but it keeps saying you have to work there for 1 year, I've only been at my job for the past 6 almost 7 months. and now my son has to have surgery on his polyups this spring/summer we find out at the end of this month.

Thankyou everyone in advance for your help.

Yes, the FMLA does not apply until you have been at your job for a year. Companies can make exceptions to this but it is up to them. I would get doctor's notes for every time that you have to miss work whether or not its for you or your son. You may want to start looking for another job if its really going to be this big of an issue for you and them.

Are you alternating care taking responsibility with your partner/spouse? I'm just wondering if you can split the time off up a bit or find someone to help care for your son so you don't have to miss quite so much work. Also, does your partner/spouse qualify for FMLA days yet?
You've invested 6 months at your current job and it seems a shame to have to start all over again somewhere else. This problem isn't going to go away and it will be hard to find an employer that can deal with you taking that much time off.

Hello, I'm Sean Im new to the site but my son is 11 and was diagnosed with cf @ 5 months of age and it has been very difficult to find a job that understands how important it is to be there for your child. I've lost great jobs but the first priority for my is the health and well being of my family and my child. My son has been hospitalized quite a bit with his cf and cfrd and just recently his liver transplant. My husband and I have finally decided that my place is at home taking care of our family in this way. You can fight for your job, but always remember whats more important in life<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">
