Hi all,

I have worked at the same place for almost a year....and don't forsee any hospital visits or anything like that, but I have the chance to participate in a CF study related to testing digestive enzymes.

The only catch is that it would require 12 to 14 doctor visits over the course of a year. I already am seeing an allergist, Ear nose and throat doctor, and my CF dr. of course. So I've missed a fair amount of work, but really no more than any of my co workers.

I think I want to participate in this study, but I don't want to seem like I'm "sneaking around" behind my boss's back for yet another mysterious doctor visit. She doesn't know anything about my health situation per se, but she definitely knows something is going on and has mentioned that "If I need any support, let her know." (in a friendly yet concerned way.)

I'd like to hear people's experiences with their work and whether or not it is advisable to tell your boss/co workers that you have CF. On a side note, I am sure my boss would be cool with it and would remain professional. The only real fear I have is her cutting me slack and giving me unnecessary sympathy...definitely not what I need, especially since I want to move up and advance in my company.

Stories? Good/bad would be great! <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif" border="0">

I'm a 39 yr old female with CF and CFRD. I told my boss...he was ok with it. I told him that every 3 months I had to take half a day off to go to my CF appts. And he/she knows that if I don't show up for work it's bcause of my CF. My CF affects my digestion...so if I don't go to work then there are serious probs. Go ahead tell ur boss!! They may need a lil info as to what CF is and by all means go ahead explain.....

G'Luck!

My opinion is if the boss is having some concern, is open to giving support and you've been at the job longer than a year, to let her/him know.
My opinion would be to just start off with the fact you have some health issues, which requires frequent doctor visits. If the boss asks more, then just gradually explain it.
It is all dependant on what kind of person you have for a boss, however. Not wanting to go into full detail about your personal (and private) health may allow you to ask the person to go ahead and ask personal questions, but that you may refuse to reply.
The main thing is that the boss understands you are still capable of doing your work, and your personal days off are legitimate.
I hadn't told my bosses, but then they wouldn't know what CF is in Japan, and I'd have to look up the Japanese word for it, again. I may eventually tell the guys in the French Company that are working with us, only because I think they would know what CF is.
