I would let my work know, you have an established presence and track record so they cant suddenly start treating you different know, much different than if you just started which can understandably be harder.

Only you know what your work place is like but I have had nothing but positive experiences. I have had fabulous bosses that were more than understanding and even asked, "are you sure you dont need to go home today, its not problem etc".

I explain more than I need ot just so they know that I dont miss 'just because'. It also gives me opportunity to educate but that is up to you. I find I have to let people know it is 100% ok to ask a ? or they are too afraid to. I ahve found nothing but support and EVEYRONE knows about me now, from my boss's and team leads, to my director, to the director of the site.

My personal policy has always been to not tell anyone in the work arena for as long as humanly possible. I would end up telling coworkers after they start asking me enough about why I cough so much, then I tell them but I wait longer to tell the boss. In one of my previous jobs, I didn't tell my boss until I had to go for a tune up. At that point I explained that I have CF (which he didn't know anything about) and I usually go in for these routine hospital stays for 2 weeks. I don't know the best way to handle it all, but for me, I prefered to go about it this way. I knew there were coworkers who could take over me for but it would just cause them more of a load. All of these people I worked with including the boss, were extremely nice people, so they immediately focused the energies on me getting better. They all came to visit me as a day trip together while I was in too. Funny.

I think if I had a boss who was not as understanding as that guy, I would be more stressed out and make sure that whatever youre asking for is within the legal rights as an employee. I don't think they can really tell you not to go to the doctors, but in terms of participating in a CF study, that might come down to how cool your boss is or not. I imagine they don't have to 'let you' do a research study if it's going to hinder their workflow.

Good luck.

I wait a year and then tell. I wait this long because I want them to see that I'm not absent more than the average employee and I do feel the need to tell because I don't want them to think my cough is contagious.

The response is always the same...(with a sort of so why are you telling me tone....) "So do you need any provisions made?! I swear bosses must all go the same ADA training or something." Just kidding but it is sort of weird that they all respond the same way.

I told my boss I have CF and if he didn't like it, I would sit back at home and he'd still give me a paycheck! And it worked. Oh, my boss is also my husband. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif" border="0">
It works out well that he's my boss, he can tell when I don't feel good and will TELL me to go home and rest.

Good luck with your decision.
