When you see people giving you the 'ole "evil eye", look them dead in the face and say " It's herediatary " ( give a big sigh) then - shaking your head say " Just thank God that you don't have to live with it every minute of <b>YOUR</b> life."

Should give them something to think about. (Ohhh, did I sound cynical?) <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-shocked.gif" border="0">

I High school, Ry worked in a drugstore, and had the same issue. His general response was a quick. "You can't catch it, I have Cystic Fibrosis, and it's genetic. There's your change, have a nice day."

When I would have a coughing attack like described or a big loud cough usually in the bathroom, many times someone would say, "are you ok?" I would say it is not contagious do not worry. I have cystic fibrosis.

I remember my ex husband could tell that I had to cough and if were out in public he would say go to the bathroom and have a good cough" That was a nice thing that he use to do.

I usually did not cough that much in public because I did lots of therapies. I was a nut with keeping my lungs clear before going out and about.

I worked in a movie theater in high school and lil beyond and people would say that to me ALL the time. I HATE that sooooo much. I always just chalk it up to allergies as well, its easier to explain, but then again, I love what you say DBtoo. I just dont want to have to explain it to everyone.

I also once had a professor say that to me in college. I was soooo embarrassed, luckily it wasnt in class, but she was like "DONT come near me, i cant bring that cough home to my husband." I know that her husband was sick and dont get me wrong, I felt her pain and it was obv a very hard time for her, but she wouldnt even let me explain. I said "im sorry, its not contagious, I swear" and she still flipped out on me. I was flabbergasted...

I can understand people getting alarmed and lookin at someone for thier cough. It's just like if u were out somewhere and there was someone having a coughing spell, u would not want to be around them, because of fear u could catch something that could be very devestating to your lungs. Or how do u not know this person is not immunocompromised or even have CF themselves. While it doesnt make it right or easy, it is just human nature. CF people don't wear a sign that says I'm not contagious.....

Hi Erin.... I worked in a restaurant for 7 years, up until about a month ago. I would have the nastiest coughing fits, the kind where I couldn't breathe and I was coughing stuff up into a napkin. Luckily, though, the restaurant had 2 sidestations that I could duck into whenever I felt one coming on so it never happened in front of a guest. I also had everyone I worked with "trained" in what to do when that would happen to me - Don't ask me if I'm okay (because I am or will be), just get me water and napkins, and don't make a big deal of it. They were so nice about it and would ask me if there was anything they could do to help my tables while I recovered for a few minutes.

Once in awhile I would get a few guests asking me if I was sick. If they looked like decent people I would tell them I had CF, and if they looked like morons (I'm so judgemental!!) I would just tell them I had a cold. I figured if they wanted to get all bent out of shape about it, they could talk to a manager and the manager could put them in their place!
