Working with CF

Hi everyone.

I am graduating from college in May and it is getting to be about that time where I decide what to do with my life. The last couple years at school I have had some trouble wtih getting sick and having to go to the hospital way more often then I would like. I have been three times since decemeber!

My question for you all is how many of you work full time? What types of jobs are you all doing? How do you deal with missing work when you are feeling sick or have to go into the hospital for IVs?

Any suggestions or advice would be great, I am just trying to figure out how I want to go about entering the working world... =)

Thanks

I dont work anymore. My first two real jobs I didnt get sick so it was no big deal. My 3rd job I was in the hospital twice in a year. I worked in the Purchasing Department of our local Hospital. It was cold & awful in my office. My boss finally suggested I look for another position. He was great, but he had an office to run. SO I moved to the Admissions Office of the same hospital and I was there for 11 years. My bosses were great. I was out a few times for hospitilizations. I didnt abuse sick time so they were always willing to work with me. After having my daughter and finding it difficult to balance things is when I got really sick. I had to make a final decision about work which was made with the input from my immediate Supervisor, the Director of the Department and my co workers. I needed the encouragement to do what was best for me because at the time I felt like a failure.

Melissa-My advice to you woudl be to look more at the benefits and stability a company has then the pay as that can always increase with time. THe bigger a company is the better (generalization here) because they have to be more careful with their policies regarding time off and disability government work also generally lends good benefits. Also generally speaking bigger companiies have better insurance.

I work for a large pharmaceutical company and since we have more than 40 employees we have FMLA this is a national law which menas I have up to 12weeks year to miss and my job is saved and I am not penalized. Additionally my company pays me for this time. THey are very afraid crossing any lines unlike many small companies who just dont know as much with the legalities and often handle FMLA and disability poorly from what I have seen with others. My employers never ask for reason I am out or proof I am sick. I had to fill out paperowrk initially and now I am covered. Once I have been out 5 days it is considered short term disability then I do have to fill out paperwork but if I am just under weather a couple days I am paid, no questions asked 100% fine this is HUGE as it keeps me from letting myself get run down and really sick. With the experience I have at this company I could go to a very small company and have a much more prestigious career and make alot more possibly but I would not have the great benefits I have so it is not worth it I will continue to work my way up slowly at larger company with bigger benefits.

All of this is just my expereience and my vary depending on where you live I wish you the best!

I work as a teacher and it is really hard. The key is good insurance and an understanding boss. I do IVs during my breaks or I go to work with them. Then I can save my sick days for when I am really sick

What did you major in?

I work 40 hours + on call (meaning they call me when there is an issue) as a Database Administrator.

Hey girl,

The first part of working is to pace yourself. I know it's been tough in college because there are so many parties and you stay up all hours of the night, etc. And that has a big impact with how often you're in the hospital.

I do outside sales. I'm supposed to work 8 to 5, but sometimes like today when I have a cold, if I need a few extra minutes in the morning, it's ok for me to do what I need to do. I work with docs so I'm very familiar with the whole industry.

I'm going back to get my MBA because I don't want to do sales forever, however lucrative it is for this 25 year old. I will be going through the same thing you are - what do I want to do?

It's not easy. But it can be done. Just pace yourself girl and take care of yourself - if you continue the partying from college you'll never be able to hold down a job because you'll be in the hospital so much!
