Hi,

My boyfriend has started with a very dry and persistent cough yesterday. The days before he had a sore throat. He did his PTF yesterdays and they had go down to 88 from 94 last month. He was started on amoxyclavulanic to treat and s. aureus that is what he usually cultures. His last culture was taken 3 days ago and we are waiting for the results, so far only s. aureus but they told us to call back tomorrow that will be when they have the antibiogram and be sure he doesn´t grow anything else.
My question is he started amoxyclavulanic yesterday morning and so far his cough has gotten worst. His sputum is white. could it be a viral thing, or maybe it´s not enough time with the antibiotic? How long does it take for you to get over a cold???
Thank you for the answers

It could be a virus, but even if it is sometimes antibiotics are still a good idea so that he doesn't get a secondary infection as well. Right now I am fighting mono AND a lung infection and it really beat me down for a few days. If I had started antibiotics a couple day sooner I might not have gotten the lung infection. I would start to worry if what he coughs up is green and/or bloody.

Normal cold is supposed to take 10-14 days to be pretty much gone. But where I am (DC area), there's a cold everyone's catching that seems to hit everyone with about 3 weeks of mostly a nagging unproductive cough from the voicebox area among the non-CF set. My son w/CF got it and it's all the same but it also seems to be at least partly responsible for a bunch of gunk developing in his lungs...so we've been coaching to turn those nagging tickles into productive coughs (& he's going in for IVs in a week for this and other reasons). While waiting for the IVs, he's taking Tobi and bactrim at the moment.
