YET another port ??

I suppose I should clarify, that I took my needle out because I wanted a good, full bath. My port had been accessed for nearly a month, and I was feeling particularly grungy around the tegaderm. Also, I wanted to allow my skin a chance to breath for a bit in the 8 hours between infusions. (Also, I wanted to spend some "quality time" with my husband without having to be careful about the needle..it puts a damper on the social agenda if you get my drift) It's just my personal preference. Usually I do shower with the port accessed. I basically just wrap my chest in 2 layers of Saran wrap to keep the water off the site.

The new saran wrap that sticks to things I dont know what it calls works great for me, I double fold it in a square stick it to me and tape edges--much less hassle then a picc.

I too have to change needle once a week and the tagaderm bandage thing when it needs it or abotu every 3 days.

I also when I change bandage change it right after a dose so I can get in a nice shower and give skin some time to breathe before I re-access it for my next dose.

Like Emily, I change my needle every week when accessed. That is what I was told to do, to keep infection away.

I do not shower with my port accessed, I take tub baths & wash my hair while benting over into the utility room sink. I was told not to take a shower with it accessed because it increased the chance of water getting into the dressing, even with extra tegaderm or Saran wrap. I do take a shower in between changing the needle. Tub baths are okay, but there is nothing like a shower.

kj has tegaderm on hers and has never been told to not shower with it. She can't have a bath with it though. She has her needle changed once a week. She has had her port for 6 yrs now.

I don't know if it's just me or not, but I was told to change the needle in my port every week if I'm using it, not every month.</end quote></div>

I only flush it every month when it's NOT accessed. The dressing gets changed on a weekly basis when it IS accessed.
