My wife and I are into cycling and we both are aware of what some pro cyclist do to get an edge. And we got into a conversation about EPO (erythopotein) which is a med used to increase your red blood cell count which in turn gives you a higher cardiovascular threshhold. This was also given to the Army Special Forces so that they can be able to work in high altitudes. Although this is illegal in professional sports this med is given to some cancer patients to help them re-coup those blood cells that are in need. Now who else is more in need of some extra cardio endurance, well none other than CF'ers. I see how my wife worksout like a madman but is limited because she starts get short of breath. The EPO also lowers your heart rate which is also bad for anyone else because it takes it to dangerous lows, but someone with CF usually has a high heart rate and that maybe the EPO would help with this too. So what do you think crazy or not? I don't know maybe I'm crazy but I am gonna bring it up at her next pulmo appt.
