i was out at a bar last night with some friends for a few hours. at the time it didn't seem that smoky. i got home and was getting ready for bed and BLAM coughed up blood. i know this has happened to a lot of people on here, so i won't try to be too dramatic but MAN was it gross!

i have had it happen before where i went to a bar and then coughed up blood, but it is usually not until the next morning, and then only streaks of old-looking stuff. this was WOW bright cherry red. fortunatly, there wasn't that much of it. only a few coughs until i was only streaking.

my question is this: i had skipped my night time treatment (i know, i know, bad bad) so my first thought was, i shouldn't have skipped it, i'll do it right now. but then i thought of the people on here w/ hemoptosis who are told not to do their nebulizers. i know that in my case it was only a broken capillary, but i didn't know if h. saline would have irritated it?? i did some airway clearance and called it a night. but should i have gone ahead and done my treatment?

Laura,

Though I can't answer your questions, I always feel like I've been hit by a truck when I get home from a smoky bar or casino... I'm usually worthless for a day or two afterward. I actually have my 10 year class reunion in a couple weeks and because the informal social on friday night is at a bar, told them I'm not going. I don't want to risk feeling like crap for the Sat. dinner and dance.

I hope you find your answers here.... if not, you may want to post a subheading that this is regarding coughing up blood, so more people see it that have this issue.

Good luck!

I'm only going to go on my gut here... but I would imagine hypertonic saline *could* irritate it because the stuff is so abrasive due to the high salt content.

Laura,

Emily is correct about the HS....not a good idea. HS is an irritant and is one of the reasons to use is it's supposed to make you cough. So it could bring the blood back. Same thing with CPT...when you are having active bleeding it is good to hold off on the CPT for a while.

As for bars...I cut them out completely last year because of the smoke. I really missed going out on New Years but I really didn't miss feeling bad the next day because of the smoke.
