I (with the help of my doc and drugs) eradicated my pseudo. I haven't cultured it in 2 years. Some say that its always in your system, but you can still put it into 'hybernation'-who knows? But in any case I'm still on the Zithromax even though my pseudo is under control. I guess its for the anti-inflammatory properties.

Pseudomonas aeruginosa
It's a Gram-negative, aerobic, rod-shaped bacterium with unipolar motility and a opportunistic human pathogen. It is the most common (serious) bacteria for cfers to culture.
Does anyone know if azithromycin works against PA? My doctors have always told me that I take it for antiinflammatory that taken MWF it doesn't work as an antibiotic. Also it is listed on the cf site as an antiinflamatory advancement not an antibiotic advancement.
Here are the anti's that work against PA to my knowledge:
* aminoglycosides (gentamicin, amikacin, tobramycin);
* quinolones (ciprofloxacin, but not levofloxacin or moxifloxacin)
* cephalosporins (ceftazidime, cefepime, cefpirome, but not cefuroxime, ceftriaxone, cefotaxime)
* ureidopenicillins (piperacillin, ticarcillin: P. aeruginosa is intrinsically resistant to all other penicillins)
* carbapenems (meropenem, imipenem, but not ertapenem)
* aztreonam

Christian, I think we both know that we are both smarty pants 
So I just talked to my doctor's nurse coordinator (about getting the flu shot) and while I was on with her I asked about Zithro and she said that although it doesn't work against PA that it does help with lung function, the medical community thinks its an antiinflammatory response that's yielding the higher lung function but really they don't know for sure?! The two different dosings 250 everyday or 500 on MW&F results in the same efffects. She said they prescribe the MWF unless the patient has trouble remembering then they do 250 everyday.
