I'm 24 now, diagnosed at 10 weeks. I've always had a slight runny nose, even when I'm not sick. The rule of thumb in my family is that if the snot is clear, it's not an issue. As soon as there's any color to it, we up treatments and start watching, or call clinic.
Thanks for your reply. I'm kind of figuring it's all a part of the process, but since I've developed several skin sensitivities over the last year, it doesn't hurt to ask. :)
So I've had my port for a little over a year now. I'm really getting used to it, learning which dressing covers give me an allergic reaction, and things like that. I learned one of the last cycles that the little bio patches are a really bad idea for me, as within hours on placing one, I had...
I'm currently in the middle of inhaled Coli. My instructions were to mix 4mL of sterile saline with each vial, and inhale as much of the 4mL as possible.
I was also warned to not use any "pre mixed" vials, as Coli becomes toxic to the lungs after a while. So a new mix and a new vial with every...
I have to agree with Juls. I have the InCourage vest and feel like it's really made a difference. It can have multiple settings saved, and switching up my routine helps, I think.
Plus, you have to "lock" the air tubes on to the best, and my dad pointed out that the air pressure, flow, and...
It does not violate HIPAA because no actual medical information is given. Yes, the individual is tied to the amount of money being paid. But personal medical information is not being given out. The insurance isn't saying "We need you to approve 'x' amount of money to cover med a, b, and c for...
From what I know of insurance talking with my dad, the HR person doesn't actually now where they charges are going to, just that there is a large charge. For example, last year the company he works for had to change insurances because of three large expenditures. The HR person know who these...
I try and spend as little time outside when it's cold. The lower the temperature, the more I cough. I don't go on as long of bike rides now. I can't hike as much as I used to, or as far, unless I bring oxygen with me. Little things like that. For the most part, I still try and do anything I want...
When I was a kid and healthy, there is not one thing I didn't do because of my CF. If my younger sister could do it (she's a carrier), I did it. Now that my health isn't as good, there are things I avoid, not out of fear, but because I'd rather avoid a coughing fit.
As for avoiding infections...
I went through something like this last year. I do not have a job, like you do, but I occasionally watch a couple kids and at the time last year, I was going to have a month long stint of watching them. My health has been declining for several years, and the decline has sped up over the last...
Have you ever checked yourself in "voluntarily" for a tune up?
I go in voluntarily twice a year, once in summer and once in winter. Even if I don't feel particularly sick, I do it. Up until last year, it kept me healthy for the better part of every year. The last year has been worse...
I have severe joint pain from cf related arthritis. I get small, reddish spots all over when it happens. It usually pops up when I'm starting to get sick.
I wouldn't be extremely worried yet. It's a drop, but it's the first drop. It could have just been an "off" day for your son. I've had those when I thought for sure I'd be high 50s, maybe even low 60s, only to blow a 43. It if he continues to trend down that it becomes a real concern...
If you had a home care nurse, see if he or she can use any of the supplies. When I switched from a PICC line to a port, I had a lot of extra PICC supplies I have to her. She likes having the extras, in case she has a patient who hasn't heard of an item, like the line extensions, or doesn't have...
My MRSA tends to grow in my right lung, and my pseudo in my left. There is a little bit of crossover, but when I feel a mucus plug shift from the right, the MRSA is always an outrageously high number, and the same for my left side. I've thankfully never grown cepacia, knock on wood.
I noticed...
Another thing I remembered last night that helped me was the calendar. When I was your son's age, my parents bought a calendar and some stickers. Every time I did my vest, I got a sticker to place on the calendar for that day. Every meal I took my pills without being reminded, I got a sticker...
You touch on something important ashamalie. Your son's treatment/meds/life make him more special in your eyes, in a good way. He probably sees himself as special, too, but in a bad way. It's really difficult to know you're different when all you want to do is fit in.
When I was about his age, I...
I have taken Cipro for many years, but had to stop Levaquin after the first dose. My joints swelled and hurt like hell (please pardon my language, but it's the only phrase that describes it). Never taken levaquin again, but I've still taken and handled cipro just fine.
I have to agree with the previous two posters. I have a younger sister, without cf. The only difference in how my parents raises us was that I got an extra pudding cup (after my sister went to bed) for a few extra calories every day. Beyond that, if my sister would be allowed to do it, so was I.
My grandmother is similar. She wants to know everything, and my life (in her eyes) is either perfect or I'm two breaths from my death bed. I used to fill her in as much as possible, but her attitude eventually got to be too much for me. I have to do what keeps me happy and sane, and keeping her...
