Starting the process for transplant... get listed or wait for Kalydeco/VX-809?

I am not in your exact situation, but close. I only have one copy of 508. I don't know if any of the new drugs coming out will help me before I get worse. I know I have alot of lung damage and I don't think any of the new drugs being tested will reverse lung damage (I could be wrong). My lung...

How do you get along while waiting?

I haven't worked in over three years becuase of my lungs. I'm not sick enough to get listed yet, but I'm not healthy enough to do much of anything physically. I am a husband and a parent of two boys. I spend my time being the best husband and dad I can be. I'm OK not working because I was...

    pittsburgh transplant center

I was evaluated in Pitt about two years ago. Still not sick enough to be listed yet. I live about 3 1/2 hours from Pitt in Ohio. They said that is about the limit of how far away a person could live. Once your transplanted, you need to stay in Pitt for rehab and appointments for some time. I...

Personal Spirometry Survey for insurance and a correction!

The question about cost of stay for hospital visits- Are you looking for the cost the insurance company pays or our out of pocket cost? Is is possible to have an options that says "not sure" because I don't know the cost of all my hospital visits. I could make an educated guess I suppose...

    Night oxygen

I agree with the others that it takes time to get used the cannula and tubing. If you toss and turn alot in your sleep, it may take longer to get used to it. I started O2 a few years ago and after a week or so I hardly knew I was using it. Good luck. Mark

    Anyone on Fortaz

Just over a year ago, I went to UPMC to start my transplant evaluation. I'm still not sick enough to get transplanted yet, but the process has been started. Anyway, the doctor there, Dr. Pilewski, suggested I start inhaled Fortaz instead of TOBI. I've been on Fortaz for over a year and I think...

What's your lung function and what can you do with it?

@ CyrilCrodius- you stated in your last post that there wasn't much you could do because of the extreme temperature changes. I agree that it's difficult to exercise in extreme temps. Last night I felt like doing some activity, so I walked back and forth between the kitchen and the family room...

    arm vs chest port

I've had a chest port for about three years. It's located just below my left clavicle. The main pro for me is no more picc lines. I had about a dozen in my life. A few cons would be: a monthly flush is recommended, which is not a huge problem. When the port is accessed I have to remember to...

Out of state transplants because of b. cepacia?

I am going through UPMC for the same reason. I live in Ohio near Toledo and could not get evaluated at U of Michigan or Cleveland because of cepacia. I started the process at Nationwide in Columbus, but the program there quit transplants or cepacia transplants after the director left. I have...
